File and Settings Transfer Wizard XP - Computer Restoration (Part 1)

Simplifying Data Migration with Windows XP's File and Settings Transfer Wizard
Following a hard drive reformat and a fresh installation of Windows XP, the built-in Files and Settings Transfer Wizard streamlines the process. This utility is also beneficial when transferring your personal data and configurations to a newly acquired computer.
Saving Files and Settings – Part 1
In Part 1, we will detail the procedure for backing up your files and settings from the original machine. It’s crucial to employ the identical version of Migwiz.exe on both computers to ensure compatibility.
Discrepancies in version numbers can render the created file unusable. To confirm version consistency, utilize the Windows XP installation disc on each machine to access the File and Settings Transfer Wizard (FAST).
You will also require a storage medium for the FAST file. The resulting folder will resemble USMT2.UNC, and the data file will be named similarly to IMG00001.DAT.
On the source computer, navigate to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > File and Settings Transfer Wizard. The FAST Wizard interface will then appear.
Click "Next" to proceed.
Since we are initiating the saving process from the old computer, ensure that "Old computer" is selected. Then, click "Next".
If your environment includes a network, browse to a designated shared folder to store the backup. Alternatively, you can utilize CDs, DVDs, or a direct connection.
Now, you can choose to transfer settings, files, or a combination of both. Selecting the "Let me select a custom list of..." option allows for the removal of unnecessary files and settings, accelerating the transfer process.
If you are uncertain about specific requirements, it’s best to retain the default settings. Click "Next".
This screen allows you to specify which settings and files to include or exclude. Once you have made your selections, click "Next".
The Wizard will then commence the transfer of files and settings to the previously specified location. The duration of this process will depend on the volume of data and the network speed.
Upon completion of the FAST wizard, simply click the "Finish" button.
Verifying Migwiz.exe Version
As previously mentioned, verifying the identical version of Migwiz.exe on both machines is essential. Insert the Windows XP installation disc into the computer, and a menu will appear.
Select "Perform additional tasks".
Next, choose "Transfer files and settings". This will launch the FAST wizard, as if accessed directly.
Looking Ahead
Later this week, we will cover the process of transferring your saved FAST file to the new machine!
