PlayOnLinux: Install Windows Games & Software on Linux

Simplifying Windows Application Installation on Linux with PlayOnLinux

PlayOnLinux offers a user-friendly graphical interface designed to streamline the installation and configuration of Windows software within a Linux environment.

Essentially, it functions as a package manager, but specifically tailored for Windows games and applications when running on Linux systems.

Automating Wine Configurations

Previously, we detailed utilizing Wine to execute Windows software on Ubuntu and various other Linux distributions. PlayOnLinux builds upon this foundation by automating the often complex and repetitive setup procedures.

For applications that are officially supported, PlayOnLinux presents a curated list, and then manages the installation process with a high degree of automation.

Key Benefits of Using PlayOnLinux

  • Simplified Installation: Reduces the manual steps required to install Windows programs.
  • Automated Configuration: Handles many of the technical adjustments needed for optimal performance.
  • Application Support: Provides pre-configured setups for a wide range of popular applications.

This makes running Windows software on Linux significantly more accessible, even for users without extensive technical expertise.

Installation

PlayOnLinux is available within the Ubuntu software repositories. This allows for convenient installation either through the Ubuntu Software Center or via a command-line instruction.

To install using the command line, execute the following:

sudo apt-get install playonlinux

Alternatively, the most recent version can be obtained directly from the PlayOnLinux website. Download the appropriate .deb file designed for Ubuntu and initiate the installation process by double-clicking the downloaded file.

For ongoing updates, a series of four commands, as detailed on the PlayOnLinux website, can be utilized. These commands add the official PlayOnLinux software repository to your system.

Adding the repository ensures that new releases of PlayOnLinux will be presented as available updates within Ubuntu’s Update Manager.

Application Installation Process

Upon completion of the initial setup, initiate the installation by clicking the "Install" button located on the toolbar. Alternatively, the installation process can be started by selecting "Install" from the File menu.

The install window provides a means to explore the available applications. Users can also utilize the search function to locate specific software titles. PlayOnLinux distinguishes itself by offering a particularly extensive library of games, addressing a common limitation of Linux platforms.

However, the software catalog extends beyond gaming. A diverse range of applications are supported, including older versions of popular programs.

Available Software Titles

  • Internet Explorer 6 and 7
  • Apple iTunes and Safari
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4
  • Microsoft Office 2000, 2003, and 2007

After choosing an application and clicking "Install," an installation wizard will guide you through the subsequent steps. This wizard streamlines the installation procedure.

The method of obtaining the necessary installation files varies depending on the chosen application. PlayOnLinux may automatically download the installer, prompt the user to locate and select the setup file, or request the insertion of the program's installation media.

In some cases, the program’s CD or DVD may need to be inserted into the computer’s optical drive to proceed with the installation. The wizard will adapt to the specific requirements of each application.

Initiating and Controlling Applications

Following the installation of Windows applications, they become visible within the primary PlayOnLinux interface. These applications can be started either directly from the PlayOnLinux window or through desktop shortcuts that are generated.

The toolbar provides options for managing installed software. Specifically, the Remove or Shortcut buttons facilitate uninstallation of applications or the creation of additional shortcuts.

Application Management Features

PlayOnLinux offers streamlined methods for both launching and maintaining your Windows programs. This ensures a user-friendly experience on your Linux system.

Uninstalling unwanted applications is made simple with the dedicated Remove function. Creating shortcuts provides convenient access to frequently used programs.

The application list within PlayOnLinux serves as a central hub for all your installed Windows software. From here, you can easily manage and interact with each program.

Wine Versions

Certain applications exhibit compatibility only with designated Wine versions. PlayOnLinux streamlines this process by automatically procuring and installing the requisite Wine version for each application, thereby eliminating manual intervention.

This feature alleviates the need for users to independently manage Wine versions.
