India's Startup Ecosystem Booming in Early Q3

Ola Electric Secures $200 Million Funding at $3 Billion Valuation
This morning, Ola Electric revealed the successful completion of a $200 million funding round, resulting in a company valuation of $3 billion. The parent company, Ola, is widely recognized as a leading ride-hailing service originating in India.
To date, Ola has accumulated over $4.5 billion in funding, according to Crunchbase data. Ola Electric has now surpassed $500 million in total fundraising, based on recent calculations.
India's Booming Startup Scene
The magnitude of these figures is unlikely to be startling, reflecting the increasing dynamism within the Indian startup landscape. It appears that nearly every day, TechCrunch reports on a new unicorn emerging from India, or at least a substantial nine-figure funding event.

An analysis of early third-quarter data was undertaken to assess the recent performance of venture capital investments in India. The objective was also to determine if the considerable activity observed in the Indian startup market translates into tangible results.
This involved a review of historical data pertaining to India, coupled with current data collection to understand the country’s trajectory as the third quarter nears its conclusion. For comparative purposes, data from the Chinese startup market, both historical and current, was incorporated to benchmark India’s progress.
Data Dive into Indian Venture Capital
We will be looking at historical trends in India’s venture capital activity. Furthermore, we’ll perform some rapid data analysis to gain a clearer understanding of the direction India is taking as Q3 progresses.
Comparing India’s performance to that of China’s startup market will provide valuable context. This will allow us to assess how the two nations measure up against each other in terms of venture capital and startup growth.
The goal is to understand if the current momentum in India is sustainable and what factors are driving this growth. Analyzing these data points will offer a more comprehensive view of the Indian startup ecosystem.
Venture Capital Investment in India
An analysis of Q2 2021 data from the global venture capital landscape, largely based on CB Insights’ findings, revealed that Indian startups secured $6.3 billion in funding – establishing a new quarterly high.
We recently conducted focused searches within PitchBook, specifically targeting venture-backed companies headquartered in India. This investigation encompassed both Q2 and Q3 data for the current year, although the Q3 figures are still preliminary with a few hours remaining in the quarter.
The PitchBook results for Q2 Indian startup funding totaled slightly higher ($6.81 billion) than the amount reported by CB Insights. This discrepancy, with PitchBook’s larger figure appearing several months after CB Insights finalized its Q2 report, is expected.
Venture capital data collection inherently involves a time lag, and quarterly figures are typically refined over time. Regardless, the Q2 numbers – $6.3 billion and $6.8 billion – provide a solid benchmark for comparison with Q3.
According to PitchBook data, Q3 witnessed a greater number of funding rounds and a significantly larger influx of capital. Indian startups have collectively raised $17.23 billion across 459 deals during the third quarter.
These figures are subject to minor adjustments as PitchBook completes its data compilation and refinement process. However, irrespective of whether the $6.3 billion or $6.8 billion Q2 number is favored, it’s evident that Indian startups have substantially exceeded previous venture funding records in Q3.
This surge in investment underscores the dynamic growth of the Indian startup ecosystem. It confirms that India is experiencing the high level of activity previously anticipated and is rapidly becoming a major competitor to China in the venture capital arena.
China's Venture Capital Landscape
Last month, The Exchange initially analyzed the Chinese venture capital market, seeking discernible trends within the available data. The findings indicated that Chinese startups continued to secure substantial funding despite evolving regulatory, economic, and societal conditions. This was a positive development for these companies, though it differed from initial projections.
A subsequent review of PitchBook data for China confirms these earlier observations, incorporating more current figures. Following approximately $21 billion raised in Q2, Chinese startups are projected to attain around $25 billion in Q3, as per PitchBook’s analysis.
These figures represent a moderate performance when compared to China’s recent quarterly achievements, with reference to data from the CB Insights Q2 report for historical context.
Shifting Dynamics in Asian Venture Capital
The emerging trend is evident: China’s venture capital investment is decreasing from the peaks observed in Q4 2020. Conversely, venture activity in India is experiencing consistent growth quarter after quarter.
Another strong quarter for India, coupled with a continued modest decline in China, could potentially lead to India surpassing China and claiming second place in global startup fundraising.
This represents a significant shift from the 2018 perspective, where predictions suggested China was poised to dominate both the United States and the broader global venture capital landscape.
- Venture Capital totals in China are down from previous highs.
- India is experiencing rapid growth in venture activity.
- A potential shift in the global startup market rankings is emerging.
The changing dynamics highlight a rebalancing of power within the Asian venture capital ecosystem, with India emerging as a strong contender.
