Who Wants to Be an Astronaut? - Discovery's New Space Reality Show

Discovery Channel Announces Reality Show with Trip to the International Space Station
Discovery has commissioned a new reality television program, scheduled to premiere in 2022. This series will be a competitive event spanning eight episodes, offering participants the opportunity to journey to the International Space Station. The ultimate prize is a position as a crew member on a future Axiom Space mission.
Details of the Competition and AX-2 Mission
The victor of the competition will join the crew of AX-2, marking the second mission orchestrated by Axiom Space. This mission aims to deliver a completely private group of space explorers to the ISS. It will follow the AX-1 mission, currently anticipated to launch as early as next January.
Earlier this month, Axiom Space and NASA provided comprehensive details regarding the AX-1 mission during a press conference. The mission is planned to last eight days, transporting four paying customers to the orbital laboratory for a short-term stay.
Cost of Space Travel with Axiom Space
The cost for this unique experience, paid to NASA, is $1.69 million. This figure covers the privilege of access to the ISS, but does not include the value of supplementary logistical support provided by Axiom Space.
SpaceX and Future Missions
Axiom Space will utilize a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon spacecraft to facilitate the transport of its private astronaut clientele to the ISS for the AX-1 mission. While initial promotional materials for the “Who Wants to Be an Astronaut?” series do not specify the spacecraft for the AX-2 mission, it is highly probable that SpaceX will be involved, considering their current status as the sole provider of fully private space travel.
How to Apply for the Reality Show
The selection process, as outlined by Discovery, is open to the general public. Interested individuals can submit an application, which must include a concise video, ranging from 30 to 60 seconds in length.
The competition welcomes applications from “everyday people” seeking an extraordinary adventure.
