StumbleUpon for iPad: Discover Cool Websites

Rediscovering Web Exploration: A Look at the New StumbleUpon
StumbleUpon represents a pioneering service within the landscape of online discovery. Prior to the widespread adoption of platforms like Facebook, many users were already actively engaging with a similar “like” function on a daily basis.
The core function of StumbleUpon is to deliver a uniquely personalized browsing experience. This is achieved through a system that focuses on your preferred topics and the websites you frequently visit.
Over time, the service evolved, mirroring the trend towards social interaction seen in many other online platforms.
A Revamped iPad Experience
A new iteration of the StumbleUpon application for the iPad has recently been launched. This updated version emphasizes social features and boasts a significantly improved visual design.
After a period of inactivity, I revisited the application and found myself surprisingly re-engaged with its functionality.
The redesigned interface and enhanced social elements contribute to a compelling user experience.
It appears that StumbleUpon has successfully modernized its offering while retaining the core appeal of serendipitous web discovery.
The app’s ability to curate content based on user preferences remains a key strength.
This latest release may well attract both former and new users to the platform.
Exploring with StumbleUpon
The StumbleUpon platform offers a unique way to discover content online. New users will initially need to establish an account to begin. Upon launching the application, users are presented with the option to log in with an existing account or create a new one, with Facebook integration also available for streamlined registration.

Following a successful login, access to your personal profile is granted. Returning users will find this area populated with previously saved websites and any personal details they have provided. For instance, the profile may indicate age; in one case, it showed an account holder as 23 years old, despite years of platform usage.

The profile page also displays information regarding followers and those being followed. Users can easily navigate to and explore their saved favorites or initiate a stumble session directly from this location.
For those new to StumbleUpon, or those returning after a period of inactivity, configuring your interests is highly recommended. This customization ensures that the platform prioritizes content aligned with your preferences. Not all users are interested in fashion or beauty-related sites, for example. The interface for selecting interests is intuitive and user-friendly, allowing browsing by popularity, category, or alphabetical order.

Once your interests are defined, the homepage becomes available. While not essential for functionality, it provides a convenient starting point. From here, you can initiate stumbling across all selected interests, or focus on a single one. The platform also highlights content “Best for iPad Stumbling” and facilitates connection with friends and followed users.

Initiating a stumble is simple: tap the “Stumble” button located at the top left of the screen. If a discovered website is appealing, select “I like it!”. This action saves the site to your favorites and provides valuable feedback to StumbleUpon regarding your preferences. Conversely, a thumbs-down rating signals content you’d prefer not to encounter again.

You can refine your stumbling experience by selecting specific interests from any page. Simply tap the text adjacent to the Stumble button to choose your desired content category. Want to explore online games exclusively? This feature allows for focused browsing.

The iPad application includes a convenient feature for reviewing recently visited websites. A sideways swipe navigates through these sites, mimicking the action of turning pages. Arrow buttons at the screen's bottom also provide this functionality. Swiping to the next page automatically initiates another stumble, allowing for continuous discovery without needing to interact with the Stumble button.

The Social Dimension of StumbleUpon
StumbleUpon has consistently incorporated social features, and the latest iteration enhances this aspect considerably. A primary action users may wish to undertake is locating and following other StumbleUpon users, with the expectation of reciprocal follows.

Currently, this can be achieved by linking StumbleUpon to existing Facebook or Twitter accounts and searching for connections who also utilize the platform. In my experience, this yielded a single match. It appears my Facebook network doesn’t frequently engage with StumbleUpon. The application also proposed scanning my contacts, but due to limited contact information on my iPad, no results were found.
I am left considering how to identify friends known to be using StumbleUpon who aren't present on my Facebook or Twitter. A feature allowing a direct username search would prove beneficial.

Each stumbled-upon page now displays the name of a user who has expressed approval, alongside a “Comments & Info” button.

Selecting a user’s name allows you to view their profile and choose to follow them, or simply explore their saved favorites. This provides an effective method for discovering individuals with shared interests and offers an additional avenue for website discovery.
Tapping the “Comments & Info” button reveals profiles of other users who have liked the page, allows viewing existing comments, and enables you to contribute your own.

As in previous versions, you retain the ability to share your discoveries with others through a variety of platforms. The following is a comprehensive list of sharing options, which can be customized to reflect your preferred methods – not all options need to be displayed, only those you actively use.
Sharing via a particular service necessitates an existing account with that service and prior login credentials.

The sharing process via Facebook appeared as follows. Having previously connected StumbleUpon to Facebook during friend searching, the sharing option functioned seamlessly.
A single tap on the share button and selection of Facebook resulted in an immediate post to my wall, all without exiting the application. This is a notably convenient feature!

Final Thoughts
StumbleUpon has created a remarkably effective application. Individuals with any interest in finding interesting new websites should certainly explore it.
Even those simply seeking a pastime to occupy their leisure hours will find value in this tool.
