Discord Introduces Orbs: A New Virtual Reward System

Discord revealed on Wednesday its experimentation with a novel virtual reward system. This initiative is designed to boost user engagement with its interactive advertising features.

Dubbed “Orbs,” this new system arrives as the company prepares for a potential Initial Public Offering (IPO).

Earning and Redeeming Orbs

Users can accumulate Orbs by successfully completing “Quests.” These Quests represent Discord’s advertising format, where advertisers motivate users to view product videos or participate in games. Rewards for participation include virtual items.

The introduction of Orbs provides users with the opportunity to redeem exclusive digital goods from the Discord Shop. These include Nitro credits, unique profile badges, avatar customizations, profile effects, and items from featured collections.

Boosting Ad Interaction and IPO Prospects

The primary objective of Orbs is to stimulate greater interaction with Quests. Discord aims to demonstrate to potential advertising partners its capacity to deliver a scalable advertising business model.

Reports indicate that the company has been in discussions with investment banks regarding a possible IPO, as noted by The New York Times.

Quests are currently accessible in the bottom left corner of the Discord application on PC. Expansion to mobile platforms is scheduled for June.

Quest Performance and Nitro Incentives

Last month, Peter Sellis, Discord’s senior vice president of product, emphasized the positive results achieved with Quests. Internal data revealed that over the past year, more than 70 Quests attained a 10% completion rate, with millions of rewards distributed.

The Orbs experiment could also encourage users without a Nitro subscription to explore its benefits. Orbs can be utilized to purchase credits, offering an alternative to traditional payment methods.

For example, acquiring three days of Nitro, which usually costs $10 monthly, requires 1,400 Orbs.
