Disable Single-Click File Opening in KDE Plasma

Adjusting Single-Click Behavior in Kubuntu KDE

After transitioning from Ubuntu to Kubuntu, a primary point of frustration arose from the system’s default behavior of opening files and folders with a single mouse click, rather than selecting them. This differs from the functionality found in Windows and standard Ubuntu environments.

However, KDE’s system settings are remarkably well-organized and user-friendly. Accessing these settings is straightforward through the "start" menu.

Navigating KDE System Settings

Within the system settings, locate and select the “Keyboard & Mouse” icon. This will open a dedicated panel for configuring mouse and keyboard options.

From the left-hand menu within the “Keyboard & Mouse” settings, choose “Mouse”. Then, select the option labeled “Double-click to open files and folders - select icons on first click”.

This adjustment ensures that a single click will select an item, while a double-click will initiate its opening.

Now, single-clicking on icons will function as expected, allowing for selection without immediate execution.

The rationale behind this non-standard default behavior within KDE remains unclear, given its prevalence in other operating systems.
