Didi Seeks Funding for Autonomous Vehicle Division

Didi, a leading Chinese ride-hailing company, is actively seeking new investment for its autonomous vehicle technology division. Reports from Bloomberg News indicate a potential valuation of $5 billion for this unit.

Growing Investor Interest in Self-Driving Technology

Currently, there's significant investor enthusiasm surrounding self-driving car technology within China. This heightened interest follows recent initial public offerings (IPOs) from companies like WeRide and Pony AI.

As of Tuesday morning, WeRide boasts a market capitalization of $4.7 billion, while Pony AI is valued at $5.25 billion.

Funding History and Current Efforts

Established in 2020, Didi Autonomous Driving has already secured a total of $1.55 billion in funding, according to data from PitchBook.

A recent funding round in October 2024 contributed $298 million to this total.

Sources close to the matter have revealed that the division is aiming to secure several hundred million dollars in additional funding. Discussions are underway with potential investors, including a fund based in Beijing, to assess their level of interest.

Testing and Future Plans

Didi is currently operating a test fleet of approximately 200 autonomous vehicles across major Chinese cities, including Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai.

Despite extensive testing, the company has not yet launched commercial robotaxi services.

The anticipated funds will likely be allocated to further development of autonomous vehicle technology. A key objective is to accelerate the mass production of electric robotaxis.

These robotaxis are being developed in collaboration with electric vehicle manufacturer GAC Aion, with initial production scheduled for 2025.
