A New Approach to Language Learning for Children: Introducing Dex

Concerned by the increasing amount of time their own children spent using screens, three parents – Reni Cao, Xiao Zhang, and Susan Rosenthal – transitioned from their careers in technology to develop a product fostering engagement with the physical world alongside language acquisition. This endeavor has proven successful, culminating in a recent $4.8 million funding round for their company.

Dex: An AI-Powered Learning Tool

The innovative device, named Dex, is designed to resemble a modern magnifying glass, incorporating both a camera lens and a touchscreen interface. When a child photographs an object with Dex, its integrated artificial intelligence employs image recognition to identify the item and provide a translation of its name into the user’s chosen language.

Furthermore, Dex offers interactive story lessons and engaging games to enhance the learning experience.

Differentiating Dex from Existing Language Apps

While numerous language learning applications geared towards children, such as Duolingo Kids, are available, Dex distinguishes itself through a more immersive and hands-on methodology. The device prioritizes experiential learning, enabling children to actively engage with the language in a practical context.

“Our aim is to facilitate the learning of authentic language within real-world scenarios, in a manner that is interactive,” explained Cao to TechCrunch. “Children aren’t simply listening or following instructions; instead, they are encouraged to think critically, be creative, explore their surroundings, and cultivate curiosity, all while acquiring the relevant language associated with these concepts and objects.”

Supported Languages and Features

Dex is specifically designed for children between the ages of 3 and 8. Currently, it supports a wide array of languages, including Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.

In addition to these core languages, Dex provides support for 34 distinct dialects, encompassing variations like Egyptian Arabic, Taiwanese Mandarin, and Mexican Spanish.

Beyond object recognition, the device features a library of interactive narratives designed to encourage active participation from children. As the story progresses, children are prompted to respond, such as offering greetings in the target language.

Parental Oversight and Progress Tracking

A dedicated companion app allows parents to monitor their child’s progress in detail. This includes tracking learned vocabulary, engagement with stories, and consistent usage of the Dex device.

Future Development: AI Chatbot Integration

Dex is currently developing an AI chatbot feature, allowing children to pose questions and participate in open-ended conversations. Although currently available to a limited group of testers, the company acknowledges that it requires further refinement before a broader release.

Concerns regarding the introduction of AI chatbots to children have also been noted by the developers.

Safety Measures and Content Filtering

During testing, questions arose regarding the potential for children to encounter inappropriate language. Cao assured that “robust safety protocols” are implemented whenever the large language model is utilized for vision processing, reasoning, and text-to-speech conversion.

“An always-active safety agent evaluates conversations in real-time and filters content using a comprehensive list of prohibited words,” Cao stated. “This agent will halt conversations containing sensitive topics such as sexuality, religion, or politics. Parents will soon have the ability to customize this list with additional terms.”

The AI is also trained using vocabulary standards comparable to those found in resources like Britannica Kids and other children’s encyclopedias.

Testing demonstrated the AI’s ability to avoid topics related to nudity. However, it did successfully recognize and translate the word “gun,” a factor parents should consider.

Addressing Parental Concerns and Regulatory Compliance

Responding to feedback and acknowledging potential legal considerations, Cao stated, “I am not overly concerned about regulations, but I recognize this is a valid concern for some parents.” The company is preparing to introduce a setting allowing parents to filter specific words, including guns, cigarettes, vape pens, fireworks, marijuana, and beer bottles.

Dex also maintains a zero data retention policy, ensuring that sensitive images are not stored. However, this means parents have limited visibility into the images their children are capturing, though a complete list of learned words is available through the app.

The company is actively pursuing COPPA Safe Harbor status to ensure compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.

Investment and Pricing

The recent funding round was spearheaded by Parable, with contributions from Eduardo Vivas, UpscaleX, ClayVC, and EmbeddingVC. Prominent angel investors include Pinterest founder Ben Silbermann, Lilian Weng (former head of safety at OpenAI), and Richard Wong (ex-Coursera).

The Dex device is priced at $250. While this may seem substantial for a product intended for children, Dex positions itself as a cost-effective alternative to private tutoring (potentially $80 per hour) or language immersion programs (ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars).

The company reports that hundreds of families have already purchased the device.
