Raycast Raises $15M to Boost Developer Productivity

Raycast Secures $15 Million in Series A Funding
Raycast, a productivity application geared towards developers, has successfully closed a $15 million Series A funding round. The investment was spearheaded by Accel and Coatue, with significant participation from a group of prominent angel investors.
Investor Details
Among those contributing to the round were Johnny Boufarhat, the CEO and founder of Hopin; Jeff Weinstein, a product leader at Stripe; Jason Warner, formerly the CTO of GitHub; and Ott Kaukver, the CTO of Checkout.com.
Company Origins and Mission
Founded in 2020 by former Facebook software engineers, Thomas Paul Mann and Petr Nikolaev, Raycast was created to address a common pain point for developers. The founders aimed to reclaim time lost through constant switching between various software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications.
“Our initial motivation stemmed from a desire to refine our own work processes,” explained CEO Mann in a recent interview with TechCrunch. “As developers, we observed considerable time spent on repetitive tasks that yielded limited value. We prioritize focusing on core development work. Raycast is designed to facilitate faster task completion.”
Core Functionality and Features
Raycast streamlines information access and updates through a command-line-inspired interface. The platform automates routine processes, enabling developers to concentrate on critical tasks.
Drawing inspiration from tools like Superhuman and Command E, Raycast allows for rapid data retrieval and modification using keyboard shortcuts. Users can efficiently manage Jira issues, finalize GitHub pull requests, and locate documents. Essentially, it functions as a developer-centric equivalent of Apple’s Spotlight search, consolidating job-related functions into a single application.
Growth and User Base
Raycast has experienced substantial growth, increasing its daily active user base from 130 in October 2020 to over 11,000 currently. Over 20 million actions have been performed on the platform within this timeframe.
The team currently comprises 12 members, with further expansion anticipated before the year's end.
Extensions API and Store
The company has publicly launched its Extensions API and Store in beta, empowering developers to create and share custom extensions. Within one month of the beta release, the community developed over 100 extensions, integrating with services such as Figma, GitHub, Chrome, Notion, YouTube, and Twitter.
Future Plans and Funding Allocation
Mann stated that the new funding will be directed towards establishing Raycast as the leading solution for developer productivity. “Our objective with this funding is to become the foremost provider of developer productivity tools,” he said. “We will utilize these resources to expand our team and ensure the platform is accessible to all users, enabling them to create the tools they require.”
Expanding to Teams
Raycast intends to leverage the funding to cultivate its developer community, accelerate platform growth, and extend its reach to teams. While maintaining a focus on individual developers, the company recognizes the potential of facilitating the sharing of productivity tools and workflows.
A program offering access to new team features is now available. Users can establish internal stores for building and distributing custom extensions and links tailored to their team’s specific needs.
“Teams can now develop extensions and share them privately among team members,” Mann clarified. “If an internal tool enhances productivity with a custom setup, it can be shared to benefit the entire team, saving time on routine tasks.”
Previous Funding
This Series A funding follows a $2.7 million seed round secured in October 2020. That round was led by Accel, with participation from YC, Chapter One fund (led by Jeff Morris Jr.), and angel investors Charlie Cheever, Calvin French-Owen, and Manik Gupta.
Investor Perspective
“Since our initial seed investment in Raycast, we have been consistently impressed by the company’s growth and acceptance within the developer community,” stated Andrei Brasoveanu, a partner at Accel. “This validates our initial assessment of Raycast’s potential to become an essential tool for developers. We are excited to support the team as they continue to innovate with the API and Store launch and expand their offerings to teams.”
