The Expanding Role of 3D Printing in Healthcare

While widespread mass manufacturing using 3D printing remains a future goal, its application in the health sector is already significantly impacting the industry. Areas like orthodontics and the creation of prostheses are ideally suited for additive manufacturing techniques.

Limitations of Current 3D Printing Applications

Traditional prototyping has inherent limitations in terms of scalability. Achieving true mass production levels is currently unattainable for many 3D printing systems. However, the medical and dental fields present a substantial market where a high degree of customization is not only desired but often essential.

Desktop Metal Launches Desktop Health

Desktop Metal recently announced the launch of Desktop Health, a dedicated business line focused on healthcare-related products. This new venture incorporates a diverse range of technologies, including binder jetting, bioprinting, and the utilization of various advanced materials.

According to Ric Fulop, CEO of Desktop Metal, the global market for medical and dental implants exceeds $85 billion annually. He believes a significant portion of these components could be 3D printed and tailored to individual patients within the next decade, presenting a major opportunity for the company.

Applications Beyond Dentistry

While dentistry and orthodontics – encompassing products like retainers and clear aligners – are currently central to the focus, the potential applications extend far beyond these areas. The company is actively exploring possibilities such as tissue printing and graft creation to expand the scope of its offerings.

Leadership and Strategic Acquisitions

Michael Mazen Jafar, formerly COO of Evolus, will lead the new division as its CEO. He states that Desktop Health is committed to transforming patient experiences through innovative, scientifically grounded healthcare solutions.

Desktop Metal initially announced plans to become a publicly traded company via a SPAC merger last August. In January, the company completed the acquisition of EnvisionTEC for $300 million. This German firm specializes in photopolymer printing, a crucial technology for advancements in dental applications.

EnvisionTEC already serves over 1,000 dental clients, including Smile Direct Club, which will provide a strong foundation for the growth of the new Desktop Health division.
