DeepSeek AI Tops US Play Store Charts

DeepSeek AI App Achieves Top Ranking on Google Play Store
The Android application developed by Chinese AI laboratory DeepSeek has rapidly ascended to the number one position on the Google Play Store. This achievement occurred shortly after the company’s chatbot application secured the top spot on the Apple App Store.
Download Statistics and Growth
Data from AppFigures, an app analytics firm, indicates that since its introduction in mid-January, the DeepSeek app has accumulated over 1.2 million downloads on the Play Store. Furthermore, it has surpassed 1.9 million downloads on the App Store globally.
It's important to note that the actual installation count may be even greater. DeepSeek’s Play Store listing displays a reported figure exceeding 5 million downloads.
Rise in Popularity Driven by Open Source Models
DeepSeek’s swift climb in the app store rankings coincides with a surge in its popularity. This increase is attributed to the release of a suite of open source AI models that demonstrate competitive performance against those offered by prominent Western AI companies.
These competing companies include Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and Google.
Cost-Effective AI Model Training
The Chinese company asserts that its AI models were trained at a considerably lower cost compared to models developed by OpenAI and Meta. Additionally, the training process utilized less advanced AI chips.
DeepSeek App Functionality
The DeepSeek app functions as an alternative to ChatGPT, leveraging the Chinese lab’s V3 model. Users can utilize the bot for various tasks, including file analysis, question answering, and web-based information retrieval.
The application is available for free and offers features such as file uploading and synchronization of chat history across multiple devices.
Long-Term Chatbot Leadership
While DeepSeek currently dominates the app charts, achieving sustained leadership in the chatbot market requires reaching 300 million weekly users. This benchmark would surpass the user base of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Industry Recognition and Integration
Both DeepSeek and its associated models have garnered significant attention within the industry in recent days. Several startups, including Perplexity and Gloo – the new venture spearheaded by former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger – are actively integrating DeepSeek into their operations.
This integration highlights the growing recognition of DeepSeek’s capabilities and potential within the broader AI landscape.
