After The Deadline: Grammar and Writing Checker

The Importance of Strong Writing Online

The internet relies heavily on written content. While web video is gaining traction, the majority of online information remains text-based.

Given that English is the predominant language online, possessing strong English writing skills is crucial for earning income through web-based activities.

Challenges for Non-Native English Speakers

A significant portion of English users worldwide utilize the language as a second or foreign language. Even for native speakers, effective English writing can be a complex skill.

To enhance the quality of written English, utilizing grammar and spelling checkers can be highly beneficial.

Limitations of Standard Tools

Although many word processing programs include integrated grammar and spelling checks, their effectiveness is often limited.

While specialized grammar checking tools offer superior performance, they frequently involve substantial costs.

After the Deadline: A Free Solution

After the Deadline (AtD) presents a valuable, cost-free alternative for verifying grammar and refining writing.

This tool provides a robust solution for individuals seeking to improve their written communication without incurring significant expenses.

Accessing and Utilizing the Tool

This tool is offered in two primary formats: as a web-based application and as plugins compatible with a range of software. The online iteration can be found at a specific web address dedicated to its functionality.

Alternatively, access is provided directly from the AtD website via the "Demonstration" link located in the header section.

Checking Your Writing

To identify potential errors within your text, simply copy and paste the content into the designated text area. Then, initiate the analysis by clicking the "Check Writing" button.

Upon completion of the process, AtD will highlight suspected errors through underlining. Selecting the underlined portions will reveal proposed corrections and detailed explanations.

The evaluation performed by AtD encompasses three key aspects of writing quality: spelling accuracy (indicated by a red underline), stylistic considerations (highlighted in green), and grammatical correctness (shown with a blue underline).

This feature allows for a deeper understanding of the suggested changes and the underlying principles of effective writing.

Expanding Tool Access: Downloading Additional Resources

Frequently revisiting the online checking tool’s webpage can be inconvenient. Consequently, AtD is offered in multiple formats, including plugins compatible with various writing platforms.

WordPress users will likely recognize the tool, as it is integrated by default into Wordpress.com and is also included within the JetPack plugin suite for self-hosted WordPress installations.

Further tool support options can be explored by selecting the "Download" link located in the page menu. Among these is a bookmarklet, easily added to most browsers (excluding Chrome) through a simple drag-and-drop action to your browser’s bookmark bar.

The bookmarklet can be assigned any descriptive name and will then be ready for use. Activating the bookmarklet introduces a proofreading button directly above any text input field. Clicking this button initiates a scan for spelling errors, incorrect word usage, and grammatical inaccuracies.

However, certain limitations do apply. For instance, the tool cannot process texts exceeding 7,000 characters, it is incompatible with WYSIWYG editors, and it does not provide stylistic suggestions.

Chrome users can utilize the dedicated AtD extension instead. Navigate to the Chrome extension page via the provided link and select install.

The AtD icon will become visible in the address bar whenever the current page is compatible with the extension’s functionality.

A browser extension is also available for Firefox users.

For those who utilize Windows Live Writer for blogging, a downloadable plugin adds a "Grammar Checker" option directly within the WLW interface. This feature leverages the AtD server for writing analysis, meaning the 7,000-character limit remains in effect and an internet connection is required for operation.

An offline solution is possible by installing the AtD plugin for OpenOffice’s word processor. While the plugin initially contacts the AtD server for checks, you can download and install the AtD server software locally on your computer. This allows you to redirect the proofreading service to a local address. Detailed instructions are available on AtD’s OpenOffice plugin page.

While the expertise of a professional language editor remains unparalleled, AtD presents a valuable resource for individuals seeking to enhance their English writing skills without the expense of commercial grammar checking software.
