Amazon Faces Antitrust Lawsuit in Washington, DC

The Attorney General for Washington, DC, Karl Racine, revealed a new antitrust case against Amazon on Tuesday. The suit centers on accusations that the company suppresses competition through its influence over independent sellers.

Filed in the DC Superior Court, the legal action claims Amazon manipulated pricing on its extensive online marketplace. This was allegedly achieved by preventing third-party vendors from offering lower prices on other platforms.

Allegations of Price Fixing

Racine contends that this arrangement compels sellers to incorporate Amazon’s substantial fees into their product prices. Consequently, an “artificially high” minimum price is established throughout the online retail sector.

Such practices potentially violate the District of Columbia’s Antitrust Act. The Attorney General’s office asserts that this control enables Amazon to wield monopolistic power within the online retail landscape.

“Amazon has exploited its leading position in the online retail market to prioritize profit above all else,” Racine stated. “This pursuit of maximum profits comes at the detriment of third-party sellers and consumers, while simultaneously hindering competition, innovation, and creating an unfair advantage.”

Seeking a Fair Marketplace

“Our antitrust lawsuit aims to dismantle Amazon’s unlawful control over pricing in the online retail market,” Racine continued. “A just online marketplace is needed to broaden the choices available to DC residents and foster competition, innovation, and consumer choice.”

Part of a Larger Trend

The lawsuit brought by the DC Attorney General represents the newest in a series of state-level initiatives to challenge the dominance of major technology companies. Both Facebook and Google are currently embroiled in multi-state lawsuits alleging anticompetitive conduct.
