The Tea application, a platform where women can anonymously share experiences regarding men they have dated, has confirmed a data security incident. The breach resulted in unauthorized access to a substantial number of images.
Specifically, hackers obtained access to 72,000 images belonging to Tea users. This figure encompasses a variety of visual data submitted through the app.
Details of the Compromised Data
The compromised data includes 13,000 selfies and photo identification documents. These were provided by users as part of the account verification process.
Furthermore, 59,000 images originating from user posts, comments, and private direct messages were also accessed. The company has stated that user email addresses and phone numbers were not part of the exposed data.
Tea clarified that the vulnerability only impacted users who created accounts prior to February 2024.
Company Response and Remediation
“We are collaborating with external cybersecurity specialists and are dedicating all available resources to reinforce our system security,” a company statement read. “Currently, enhanced security protocols have been deployed, and the underlying data issue has been resolved.”
Reported Data Sharing
According to a report by 404 Media, individuals on the 4chan platform have asserted they are distributing personal data and selfies obtained from the Tea app. This followed the discovery of an exposed database.
Recent App Popularity
This security incident occurs amidst a period of rapid growth in the Tea app’s user base. As of Saturday, the application maintained its position as the top-ranked free app within Apple’s App Store.
