The Genesis of Scribe: Augmenting Human Capabilities

Dan Siroker, the co-founder of Optimizely, shared the origins of his new venture, Scribe, stemming from personal experiences. Interestingly, these initial inspirations weren’t directly related to the platform’s current focus on Zoom.

Personal Experiences Spark Innovation

Siroker recounted beginning to experience hearing loss and subsequently having a revealing realization upon using a hearing aid. He regained a sensory input he believed was permanently lost.

This experience ignited a thought process centered around identifying opportunities to enhance natural human functions that may diminish over time. He posited that augmenting these functions could be incredibly valuable.

Aphantasia and the Drive for Memory Enhancement

Siroker further explained that memory proved to be a compelling area for exploration, especially given his personal experience with aphantasia – the inability to create mental imagery. This condition made recalling specific details particularly challenging.

From Optimizely to Scribe: A New Chapter

For context, Siroker co-founded Optimizely alongside Pete Koomen in 2010. He later relinquished the CEO position in 2017. The company was ultimately acquired by Episerver the following year, which has since rebranded as Optimizely.

Currently, Siroker serves as CEO of Scribe, which is now accepting registrations for its inaugural product. This product seamlessly integrates with Zoom meetings, converting them into searchable and shareable transcripts.

Demonstration and Functionality

During a Zoom demonstration, Siroker showcased Scribe’s functionality. The platform joins meetings as an additional participant, simultaneously recording both video and audio while generating a real-time transcript.

Users have the ability to edit the transcript, revisit specific moments in the recording, and highlight key takeaways, either during or after the meeting concludes.

Beyond Simple Recording: A Note-Taking Replacement

While the technology itself isn’t groundbreaking, the user experience impressed. Adding a single participant provides a complete recording and searchable transcript, readily available for later review – even while composing reports.

Siroker emphasized that Scribe aims to replace traditional note-taking, rather than simply acting as a recording device.

He drew a parallel to taking notes with pen and paper, which is generally perceived as acceptable and even flattering. In contrast, a visible tape recorder might create a different, potentially uncomfortable, dynamic.

Control and Editability are Key

A crucial aspect of Scribe is the ability to edit recordings and transcripts, and to toggle individual features on or off as needed.

Siroker clarified that Scribe isn’t intended to create a permanent, unchangeable record. Instead, it functions as a collaborative artifact, similar to a Google Doc, allowing for ongoing revisions and improvements.

Transparency and Accountability

The potential for recording sensitive information exists, and Siroker acknowledged the possibility of recordings leading to unintended consequences. Leaked meeting recordings have previously generated significant news coverage.

He expressed hope that such occurrences would be infrequent, but also suggested that they could foster greater transparency and accountability within organizations.

Funding and Future Expansion

Scribe has secured approximately $5 million in funding, with investment rounds led by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and First Round Capital.

Siroker views Zoom as a starting point, or “beachhead,” for Scribe’s broader ambitions. The company plans to extend support to platforms like Google Meet and Microsoft Teams.

The Vision of a "Hive Mind"

Ultimately, Siroker envisions building a collective “hive mind” for organizations, where enhanced searchability of conversations and knowledge empowers individuals to be “smarter and better.”

The company’s future direction will be guided by its potential to positively impact people’s lives, balancing value, privacy, and user control.

The Impact on Human Memory

A fundamental question arises: could widespread adoption of Scribe potentially diminish our natural ability to remember information?

Siroker responded affirmatively, suggesting that this outcome might be acceptable. He reasoned that the brain has limited resources, and tasks like recalling past conversations are ideally suited for computers.

He argued that offloading such tasks frees up valuable cognitive capacity for more complex endeavors.
