Voyage Acquisition Signals Consolidation in Autonomous Vehicle Industry

The autonomous vehicle startup, Voyage, originating from Udacity, has been acquired by Cruise. This development underscores the ongoing trend of consolidation within the developing self-driving car sector.

Deal Details and Leadership Changes

The financial specifics of the acquisition haven't been revealed. However, the majority of Voyage’s 60 employees will transition to Cruise. Furthermore, Voyage’s co-founder and CEO, Oliver Cameron, will assume the position of vice president of product.

Voyage’s existing collaboration with Stellantis (formerly FCA) will be terminated upon the completion of the acquisition.

Voyage's Unique Focus and Achievements

Founded in 2017, Voyage operated on a smaller scale compared to industry giants like Cruise, Argo AI, Waymo, and Aurora. Despite raising $52 million, the company distinguished itself under Cameron’s leadership.

Voyage became particularly recognized for its deployments within senior living communities. The company conducted testing and provided transportation services to residents in a 4,000-resident retirement community in San Jose, California, and in The Villages, Florida, a large retirement city spanning 40 square miles and housing 125,000 people.

Cameron's Vision for Expanded Impact

“Our strategy at Voyage centered on efficiently utilizing resources to enhance mobility for those with the greatest need – senior citizens,” Cameron stated in a blog post announcing the acquisition. “Significant strides were made towards this objective, providing transportation to numerous seniors, some reaching 92 years of age, within their communities.”

He continued, “Joining Cruise provides access to substantial resources, enabling us to eventually serve not only seniors but all demographics who could benefit from self-driving technology.”

Future of Operations at Senior Communities

Voyage’s current operations at the two senior communities will not cease immediately. However, Cruise has affirmed to TechCrunch that its primary focus remains commercial operations in San Francisco.

Consequently, testing or services at the senior communities will eventually be discontinued, though a specific timeframe hasn't been announced.

Cruise's Commercialization Strategy

Cameron’s appointment as VP of product signals Cruise’s progress towards launching a commercial robotaxi service in San Francisco. While Cruise has significantly expanded its engineering teams, both in hardware and software, attracting and retaining customers is crucial for establishing a strong user base.

In his new role, Cameron will be responsible for optimizing every aspect of the customer experience for Cruise’s autonomous service.

A Synergistic Partnership

Cameron characterized the combination of Cruise and Voyage as a “wonderful marriage” on Twitter. He highlighted Cruise’s possession of “the most advanced self-driving technology, unique automotive partnerships, and the first purpose-built self-driving vehicle.”

He added, “Combined with Voyage and our customer-focused team, we will collectively deliver a groundbreaking self-driving product.”

Cruise's Financial Backing

Cruise possesses the financial resources to support this endeavor. Earlier this year, the company secured $2 billion in a new equity round, increasing its valuation to $30 billion and welcoming Microsoft as an investor and partner.

GM, Honda, and other investors have also contributed additional capital to Cruise as the company nears the commercialization of its technology.
