CookUnity Expands Nationwide After $47M Funding Round

CookUnity Secures $47 Million to Fuel National Growth

CookUnity, a startup specializing in chef-crafted, small-batch meal delivery, is embarking on a significant expansion phase following a successful $47 million Series B funding round.

Recent Funding and Company History

Insight Partners spearheaded the investment, with participation from Endeavor Catalyst and existing investors including IDCV, Fuel Ventures, and Gaingels. This latest capital injection arrives just eight months after the New York-based company completed a $15.5 million Series A round, led by Fuel Venture Capital.

Since its founding in 2018, CookUnity has amassed a total of $70 million in funding.

The Genesis of CookUnity

The concept for this subscription-based service originated five years ago with Mateo Marietti, founder and CEO. Marietti, originally from Argentina, observed limitations in existing food delivery platforms – specifically, restricted food choices and pricing structures that often forced a compromise between convenience and variety.

He envisioned a service akin to Spotify, offering an expansive selection, and thus CookUnity was born, designed to connect culinary creators directly with their consumers.

A Unique Business Model

CookUnity distinguishes itself by merging the convenience of ready-to-eat meals with a chef-centric approach, delivering restaurant-caliber dining experiences to customers’ homes.

The diverse menu features hundreds of dishes, with prices starting at $10.49 per meal. Customers can choose from subscription plans offering four, six, eight, twelve, or sixteen meals weekly. Meals are quickly heated and come with preparation suggestions, ranging from microwave instructions to chef-recommended finishing touches.

Empowering Chefs Through Technology

Chefs are provided with the necessary tools and resources to establish and manage a digital-first business. Marietti revealed to TechCrunch that top-performing chefs can earn over $1 million annually through the platform.

“We are focused on building the infrastructure – collaborating with farmers, supplying ingredients, and providing the technological framework for both the customer application and the chef application,” he explained. “We do not directly employ culinary staff or prepare the food ourselves, but we equip chefs with the means to recruit cooks, develop new recipes, manage their teams, and expand into new markets, while also tracking their daily or weekly sales.”

Expanding Culinary Partnerships

The company currently collaborates with renowned chefs such as Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Marc Forgione, and Esther Choi. The Series B funding will facilitate the addition of more culinary talent, including both emerging local chefs and established restaurateurs, extending their reach beyond traditional delivery zones, as Marietti stated.

National Expansion Strategy

Beginning with a flagship kitchen in Brooklyn, CookUnity initially expanded its services to San Francisco, Dallas-Fort Worth, Boston, and Washington, D.C. Following the Series A funding, kitchens were opened in Los Angeles, Austin, and Chicago.

The new funding will accelerate nationwide expansion, with planned kitchen openings in Atlanta and Miami before the year’s end. Marietti projects that, upon completion of these new facilities, CookUnity will be able to serve 88% of the U.S. population.

Impressive Growth and Future Plans

Over the past year, CookUnity has experienced over 550% growth. Currently, the platform features over 50 chefs, with plans to increase this number to 150 across all kitchens by mid-2022.

Insight Partners Joins the Board

Rebecca Liu-Doyle, principal at Insight Partners, will join the CookUnity board of directors as part of the investment. Insight Partners adopts a long-term observation approach before investing, having monitored CookUnity for over two years.

Liu-Doyle indicated that the timing was optimal for Insight to invest.

A Unique Value Proposition

Liu-Doyle highlighted CookUnity’s strong product-market fit, chef retention rates, and focus on the expansive food market. She also emphasized the company’s ability to manage the complexities of the back-end operations for chefs while offering subscription-based revenue.

The company presents a compelling value proposition for both chefs and consumers. For chefs, it taps into the creator economy, simplifying business scaling and enabling broader reach beyond their restaurants. For consumers, CookUnity delivers affordable, convenient, and high-quality meals without compromise.

“This is democratization on both sides,” she added. “Successful execution requires a dedicated team – which Mateo has assembled – and a commitment to continuous improvement of the customer experience. This isn’t an overnight success; it demands patience and deliberate refinement.”

Note: A correction has been made to reflect that Endeavor Catalyst is the correct name of the investor, due to a company error.
