During his hosting of the 2025 Oscars, comedian Conan O’Brien, also known for his late-night television work, brought up the increasing discussion surrounding AI’s role within the Hollywood film industry in his opening remarks.

O’Brien explicitly stated, “We did not use AI to make this show.” This comment directly addressed the utilization of generative AI in the film “The Brutalist,” which received three Academy Awards for Best Actor, Cinematography, and Original Score.

The film “The Brutalist” became the subject of considerable debate last month due to its employment of AI technology. Film editor Dávid Jancsó revealed in an interview with Red Shark News that Respeecher, an AI voice generator, was used to adjust the Hungarian dialogue delivered by actors Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones.

The purpose of this adjustment was to achieve a more authentic sound. This revelation sparked an online discussion, with many arguing the film should have been ineligible for awards consideration.

Director Brady Corbet defended the film’s use of AI, clarifying that it wasn’t intended to improve the actors’ performances. Instead, Corbet explained in a public statement, the technology was solely used to “refine certain vowels and letters for accuracy.”

Further Scrutiny of AI Usage

“Emilia Pérez,” another film recognized with multiple Oscars, also faced criticism for its use of Respeecher. Re-recording mixer Cyril Holtz detailed in a video interview that the software was employed to broaden the vocal range of actress Karla Sofía Gascón.

Furthermore, Respeecher was utilized to seamlessly integrate Gascón’s singing voice with that of French singer Camille.

The increasing integration of AI into filmmaking has fueled substantial debate, largely centered on anxieties regarding potential job displacement. This concern became a central issue for both the Screen Actors Guild and the Writers Guild of America during their 2023 strikes against major production studios.

Currently, the Motion Picture Academy provides filmmakers with the option to disclose their use of AI. However, in light of the controversy surrounding “The Brutalist,” the Academy is reportedly contemplating a shift towards mandatory reporting of AI utilization in all film submissions.
