Cohere Secures $500 Million in Funding, Valuation Reaches $6.8 Billion

Cohere announced on Thursday the successful completion of an oversubscribed funding round, totaling over $500 million. This investment elevates the company’s valuation to $6.8 billion.

This represents an increase from the $5.5 billion valuation achieved just over a year prior, during its previous $500 million funding round.

Early LLM Pioneer Focuses on Enterprise Security

Founded in 2019, Toronto-based Cohere emerged as one of the initial developers of large language models (LLMs). Co-founder Aidan Gomez, a key author of the seminal “Attention Is All You Need” paper, played a pivotal role in its creation.

Despite its early prominence, Cohere has maintained a relatively low profile in the recent surge of AI model competition, which has been largely dominated by OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta.

The company’s core strategy centers on delivering secure LLMs specifically designed for enterprise applications, rather than direct consumer use.

Strategic Partnerships with Industry Leaders

Cohere has established significant partnerships with major players in the enterprise technology sector. These include Oracle, Dell, Bell, Fujitsu, LG’s CNS consulting service, and SAP.

Furthermore, the company collaborates with prominent enterprises such as RBC and, newly, the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan, which participated in this funding round.

The company’s recent press release highlighted its commitment to security, asserting that Cohere “represents a security-first category of enterprise AI that is simply not being met by repurposed consumer models.”

Expanding Leadership Team

Like other AI companies, Cohere has been actively recruiting top talent. Recently, they appointed Joelle Pineau, formerly a long-time research head at Meta, as their Chief AI Officer.

A new Chief Financial Officer, Francois Chadwick, was also brought on board, transitioning from a consulting role at KPMG. Chadwick previously held financial positions at Uber and served as CFO at Shield AI.

Investment Details

Radical Ventures and Inovia Capital spearheaded the new funding round. Radical Ventures has previously invested in companies like Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs, Hebbia, and Writer.

Inovia Capital is a well-known Canadian venture capital firm with a portfolio that includes Poolside and Neo4j.

Existing investors, including AMD Ventures, Nvidia, and Salesforce Ventures, also participated in the round.

Notably, Oracle was not listed as a continuing investor, despite having backed Cohere in 2023. A request for clarification on this matter has been sent to Cohere.

Oracle’s recent focus has shifted towards a closer alignment with OpenAI, particularly through the large-scale data center project known as Stargate.
