Clutch Secures $20M for Non-Human Security ID Platform

The Growing Importance of Machine Identity Security
In the realm of cybersecurity, identity is frequently conceptualized as a protective boundary for organizations. A significant number of security breaches originate from methods such as password compromise, phishing attacks, and credential stuffing. Consequently, safeguarding the identities of users, applications, and machines is paramount to overall system security.
Clutch Security Secures $20 Million in Funding
Recent events, including the security incident at the U.S. Treasury, have highlighted the critical need for robust identity protection. Clutch Security, a company specializing in tools for non-human (machine) identity management, has announced $20 million in new funding. This investment demonstrates the increasing market demand for solutions addressing this crucial issue.
Funding Details and Future Plans
SignalFire led this funding round, with participation from Lightspeed Venture Partners and Merlin Ventures, all of whom previously invested in Clutch’s $8.5 million seed round. The company intends to utilize these funds for research and development, product enhancement, and expansion of its business development efforts.
Platform Capabilities and Market Growth
Currently, Clutch integrates with approximately 60 popular infrastructure services, applications, and identity providers utilized by enterprises. The platform secures vital data used for inter-system communication, including API keys, service accounts, secrets, tokens, and other credentials. Clutch offers network visibility, posture and risk management, and lifecycle management services, all based on a zero-trust security model.
The scale of the challenge is substantial. Research from Venafi, a competitor, indicates that the average number of machine identities within a large enterprise has risen dramatically, increasing from 320,000 in 2022 to 1 million in 2024.
Company Origins and Founding Story
Interestingly, Clutch’s focus on perimeter security emerged during a period of heightened geopolitical tension. The Tel Aviv-based startup was founded in October 2023, coinciding with the attacks on Israel by Hamas and the subsequent conflict in Gaza.
Challenges and Early Successes
CEO Ofir Har-Chen, along with co-founders Sagi Haas and Tal Kimhi, described the founding period as both a blessing and a challenge. While the ongoing events caused disruption and limited availability of personnel, those who were able to work experienced a heightened sense of focus.
Initially, hiring proved difficult, with the first employees joining in February. However, the team rapidly developed a minimum-viable product within three months. Har-Chen believes Clutch has assembled a top-tier engineering team comprised of experienced professionals in the field.
The Enduring Problem of Machine Identity
Har-Chen, with 20 years of experience in cybersecurity, emphasized that the core problem Clutch addresses is not new. Machine identities, such as those found in Windows Active Directory service accounts since 1994, have long been potential vulnerabilities. However, the rise of cloud computing and Software as a Service (SaaS) has significantly amplified this risk.
The Emerging Threat of AI Agents
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly AI agents, introduces a new target for malicious actors. These agents are increasingly being adopted by enterprises to automate tasks previously performed by humans.
Shifting Focus from Human to Machine Vulnerabilities
Har-Chen observes a shift in focus from humans as the weakest link in security to machines and non-human identities. He anticipates a surge in attacks targeting AI agents as they become more prevalent within organizations.
A Competitive Landscape
Clutch is entering a crowded market with established players like Semperis, Astrix Security, Oasis, CyberArk (through its acquisition of Venafi), Silverfort, and Token Security. Each company offers unique approaches to identity security.
Rapid Development and Investor Confidence
The speed of Clutch’s development is a key factor driving investor interest. Guru Chahal, partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners, stated that Clutch is “reshaping the entire industry” and will be “transformative” as enterprises embrace agentic AI.
