Cloudflare Free Digital Waiting Rooms for Vaccine Distribution

Cloudflare, a leading web infrastructure provider, is announcing the release of a new solution designed to assist health organizations and agencies worldwide in the efficient and equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, offered at no cost. The company’s Project Fair Shot initiative will make its new Cloudflare Waiting Room service available to qualifying organizations, effectively establishing a digital queuing system that allows prospective vaccine recipients to register and monitor their position in line for the preventative treatment.
According to Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince, the impetus for this development arose from a personal experience. “The spouse of a Cloudflare executive based in our Austin office encountered difficulties registering her parents for the COVID-19 vaccine. She suggested to her husband, ‘Could Cloudflare create a queuing system to support vaccine sites?’ Fortunately, we were already developing such a feature, with a planned launch in early February.”
Recognizing the critical need for a tool to address the infrastructure challenges inherent in rapidly vaccinating a global population against a viral pandemic, Cloudflare accelerated its release schedule and dedicated additional resources to the project.
Prince further stated, “Our team discussed expediting the launch of our Waiting Room feature. They worked tirelessly, understanding the importance of contributing to vaccine distribution. Our team is motivated by opportunities to leverage our technical skills and infrastructure to resolve significant issues with a widespread, beneficial outcome.”
Cloudflare reports that the Waiting Room is straightforward to integrate and can be added to any registration website utilizing the company’s content delivery network without requiring any specialized engineering or coding expertise. Users registering on the site will receive confirmation of their place in the queue and will subsequently be directed to a registration page for vaccine scheduling when their turn arrives. The system also allows administrators to provide estimated wait times to registrants, with the ability to send proximity alerts planned for a future update.
As Prince noted, the Waiting Room was initially conceived for managing demand for other limited-availability items, such as popular concert tickets or highly sought-after product releases. However, through the Fair Shot program, it will be provided free of charge to organizations involved in vaccine distribution, a service that would otherwise be a commercial offering. Interested organizations can join the waitlist for access through Cloudflare’s registration page.
“Through Project Fair Shot, we are committed to helping ensure that all eligible individuals have fair access to COVID-19 vaccines, and we, along with the global community, anticipate a future free from this disease,” Prince concluded.
