Classic VST Plugins for Home Recording - Must-Haves

Home Recording with Free VST Plugins

As both a guitarist and a technology enthusiast, exploring the realm of home recording feels essential. While I don't claim to be an expert, my journey involves learning from the experiences of others and embracing the process of experimentation.

The cost of home recording can vary significantly. Comprehensive software suites and dedicated hardware effects racks can quickly become expensive investments.

Fortunately, numerous software effects effectively emulate the sound of their hardware equivalents. Today, I want to share some of my preferred VST plugins – all available at no cost and delivering excellent performance.

Utilizing VST Plugins in Your Recordings

My typical approach involves miking my guitar and bass amplifiers to capture the most authentic tone possible. I then leverage VST plugins during the mixing stage to refine the individual tracks.

All of the plugins discussed below are readily available for download from Kjaerhus Audio.

Recommended Free VST Plugins

  • Classic Chorus
  • Classic Flanger

Classic Compressor – (This plugin stands out as my personal favorite.)

  • Classic Reverb
  • Classic Delay
  • Installation and Application

Installing these plugins is straightforward. Simply download them and add them to the VST plugin folder within your home recording software.

These effects are versatile and can be applied to a wide range of audio sources, including guitars, bass, drums, and vocals.

The key to success is experimentation. Approach the process with curiosity and a willingness to try new things – you might even discover a sound that launches your career, much like Rick Rubin!
