Chrome's Expanded Autofill Capabilities

Google revealed on Monday a significant update to its Chrome browser. The browser now possesses the ability to automatically populate fields with details from your passport, driver's license, and vehicle registration documents.

This enhancement builds upon Chrome’s pre-existing autofill functionality, which already included addresses, passwords, and payment details.

How the New Autofill Works

Desktop Chrome users with enhanced autofill activated will experience automatic completion of fields such as passport numbers, driver’s license information, and vehicle data like license plate numbers or Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN).

Google emphasizes that Chrome has been improved to better interpret complex forms and accommodate diverse formatting styles, leading to increased accuracy when filling data across various websites.

The company assures users that Chrome only stores autofill data with explicit permission. Furthermore, all saved information is secured through robust encryption protocols.

Prior to automatically entering any saved data, Chrome will prompt you for confirmation, ensuring user control and security.

Global Availability and Future Updates

These new features are available worldwide, in all supported languages, starting Monday. Google intends to broaden support to encompass additional data types in the coming months.

This announcement arrives as Google actively integrates new features into Chrome to enhance its utility, particularly in response to the growing number of AI-powered browsers.

Recent Chrome Enhancements

Several weeks ago, Google made Gemini available within Chrome for all Mac and Windows desktop users in the U.S. Previously, access was restricted to subscribers of Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra.

The company also announced plans to introduce agentic capabilities to Chrome, integrate its AI Mode search directly into the address bar, and launch further Gemini features.

Additional improvements include AI-driven scam detection, automated password resets, and other security enhancements.

Chrome has also recently launched a tool that automatically disables notifications from websites you rarely visit. A streamlined feature for switching between personal and work Google accounts has also been implemented.
