Staying Informed with Weather Watcher

Regardless of your lifestyle, even those who spend considerable time indoors should remain aware of the prevailing weather conditions in their locality. This article will explore Weather Watcher, a complimentary and customizable desktop application designed to provide real-time weather updates.

Installation and Initial Setup

The installation process is streamlined and user-friendly, guided by an intuitive installation wizard. During installation, it’s advisable to decline the installation of the Ask Toolbar if it isn’t desired.

Furthermore, ensure that Ask.com is not set as your default search provider unless you specifically prefer it. Upon the initial launch of Weather Watcher, you will be prompted to configure your preferences.

Configuring Locations

A primary initial step involves setting up the locations for which you wish to receive weather information. This is managed within the “Active City” tab.

Here, you can input locations either by specifying the city name or by entering the corresponding zip code.

Interface and Features

The program’s main interface is visually appealing, offering skinnable options and intuitive controls. It is designed for ease of use.

A quick overview of current conditions can be accessed by hovering over the Weather Watcher icon in the taskbar, which can be configured to display the current temperature.

Alerts and Global Views

Weather Watcher also facilitates the setup of severe weather alerts, keeping you informed of potentially hazardous conditions.

The application provides access to various global weather maps, including those powered by NASA imagery, offering a broader perspective on weather patterns.

Additional Map Options

Beyond the standard maps, you can integrate other types of world maps to visualize different weather aspects, such as wind streams, humidity levels, and rainfall totals.

Regional and National Radar

A valuable feature is the ability to view regional or national radar imagery, powered by Microsoft Virtual Earth and The Weather Channel.

The integration with Microsoft Virtual Earth allows for detailed views by enabling you to zoom into specific areas.

A Useful Tool for All

Whether you are a dedicated “weathergeek” or simply someone who wants to know if it’s sunny outside, Weather Watcher is a highly beneficial free application. It is compatible with Windows operating systems ranging from 98 to Windows 7.
