Consumer Spending on AI Applications Surges

The anticipated decline in interest surrounding artificial intelligence has not yet materialized, particularly concerning consumer expenditure on AI apps.

Significant Growth in AI App Spending

Data from app analytics firm Appfigures reveals a substantial increase in overall spending on AI apps, reaching $1.42 billion in 2024.

This represents a remarkable 274% growth compared to the $508 million spent in 2023, following the launch of the technology in May of that year.

ChatGPT's Dominance in the Market

Despite the emergence of numerous competing applications – including those utilizing OpenAI’s technology through licensing agreements – ChatGPT maintains a dominant position.

It consistently generates more revenue than the combined earnings of other leading AI assistant apps.

Impact on Mobile Platforms

The success of these applications also benefits Apple and Google, who collect approximately 30% of revenue generated from in-app purchases.

The total market for mobile AI apps is currently valued at $2 billion, as reported by Appfigures.

User Demographics of ChatGPT

To date, ChatGPT has been downloaded 353 million times. However, its user base exhibits demographic skews.

More than half of its mobile users are under the age of 25, suggesting a greater willingness among younger individuals to explore new technologies.

Alternatively, this demographic may be utilizing the app for academic assistance; the Pew Research Center estimates that a quarter of U.S. teenagers have used ChatGPT for schoolwork, a figure that has doubled since 2023.

Age Distribution

The second largest age demographic consists of users between 50 and 64 years old, representing 20.2% of the total user base.

Gender Imbalance

A significant gender gap exists among ChatGPT users.

Appfigures estimates that men comprise 84.5% of all users across all age groups.

Gender Disparities and AI Adoption

While women are well-represented within the AI industry itself, a 2022 Pew report indicates a greater level of skepticism towards AI among women compared to men.

An Axios poll revealed that 53% of women surveyed would prohibit their children from using AI, in contrast to 26% of men.

Furthermore, McKinsey projects that women are more susceptible to job displacement due to automation, potentially contributing to increased resistance.

Vulnerability to Negative Impacts

Women may also demonstrate less enthusiasm for the widespread adoption of consumer AI products due to their heightened vulnerability to the detrimental effects of this technology, such as the creation of sexually explicit deepfake images.

Emerging Competition: DeepSeek

ChatGPT currently holds the largest share of AI app spending.

However, the introduction of DeepSeek – a free, open-source alternative – may present some challenges to OpenAI’s dominance.

DeepSeek has already surpassed OpenAI as the top app in the App Store, but sustaining this level of popularity will be crucial for the Chinese AI app.
