ChatGPT Mobile App Revenue: $2 Billion and Growing

ChatGPT Mobile App Achieves $2 Billion in Consumer Spending
The ChatGPT mobile application is demonstrating substantial financial success. Since its release in May 2023, the app for both iOS and Android platforms has generated $2 billion in revenue from global consumer expenditures, as detailed in a recent analysis conducted by Appfigures, an app intelligence firm.
Dominating the Mobile Chatbot Market
This figure represents roughly 30 times the cumulative lifetime spending observed for competing mobile chatbots, including Claude, Copilot, and Grok. The analysis clearly indicates ChatGPT’s strong position within the market.
Throughout the current year, ChatGPT’s mobile app has earned $1.35 billion. This signifies a remarkable 673% increase compared to the $174 million generated during the equivalent timeframe (January-July) in 2024, according to the reported data.
Currently, the app is producing an average of nearly $193 million in revenue each month, a substantial rise from the $25 million earned during the same period last year.
Significant Lead Over Competitors
This performance is considerably higher – approximately 53 times greater – than that of ChatGPT’s closest competitor, Grok, which has accumulated roughly $25.6 million in consumer spending year-to-date.
Grok’s average monthly consumer expenditure is estimated at $3.6 million, representing just 1.9% of ChatGPT’s total.
The data suggests that other consumer-focused chatbots still face considerable challenges in reaching ChatGPT’s level of dominance on mobile platforms. It’s important to note that these figures don't represent the complete revenue picture for these AI companies.
Revenue Streams Beyond Mobile Apps
Subscriptions to AI plans are also available via web platforms, and companies generate income through other avenues, such as their APIs. This data provides valuable insight into the apps’ consumer traction.
Consumers are discovering and paying for these AI assistants directly through the mobile app stores, offering a clear view of user engagement.
Grok’s Later Entry into the Mobile Space
It is noteworthy that when xAI’s Grok was launched in November 2023, following ChatGPT’s release, it did not initially offer dedicated iOS or Android applications.
Initially, users interacted with the AI chatbot through the X platform. Grok became accessible on mobile devices through its own iOS app starting in early January 2025, and it arrived on Google Play on March 4.
Spending and Download Metrics
Appfigures’ findings reveal that ChatGPT’s lifetime global spending per download is $2.91, compared to $2.55 for Claude, $0.75 for Grok, and $0.28 for Copilot.
In the United States, ChatGPT’s spending per download is even more significant, reaching $10. This makes the U.S. market responsible for 38% of the app’s total revenue to date.
Germany represents the second-largest market, contributing 5.3% to ChatGPT’s overall lifetime spending.
Download Numbers and Market Share
ChatGPT’s dominance is also evident in download numbers. The app has been installed an estimated 690 million times globally, in contrast to Grok’s 39.5 million installations.
This context is relevant to recent complaints from X owner Elon Musk regarding the App Store’s alleged bias towards ChatGPT in its Top Charts.
Average monthly downloads of ChatGPT worldwide are currently around 45 million, a 180% increase from approximately 16 million between January and July of 2024.
So far in 2025, ChatGPT’s app has been downloaded 318 million times, which is 2.8 times the 113 million downloads it experienced during the same period last year.
However, when considering the number of installs, India emerges as the leading market, accounting for 13.7% of lifetime downloads, followed by the U.S. at 10.3% of all downloads.
