ChargerHelp CEO Kameale Terry to Speak at TechCrunch Sessions: Mobility 2021

The Growing Need for EV Charging Station Maintenance

Over the coming decade, a substantial expansion of the electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure is anticipated across the nation. ChargerHelp!, established in January 2020 by Kameale C. Terry and Evette Ellis, is focused on ensuring the consistent operational status of these charging points.

Origins of ChargerHelp!

The concept for this on-demand repair application, specifically designed for EV charging stations, originated with Terry during her tenure at EV Connect. There, she fulfilled various roles, including Director of Programs and Head of Customer Experience.

She observed significant delays in resolving non-electrical malfunctions at charging stations. This was largely due to the prevailing industry practice of relying on electrical contractors for all service calls.

Addressing a Critical Gap

“Station downtime frequently occurred because the problems weren’t electrical in nature,” Terry explained in a recent TechCrunch interview. “Issues like communication failures, acts of vandalism, firmware updates, and simple component replacements were the primary causes.”

Following her departure from her previous position to launch ChargerHelp!, Terry participated in the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator. This allowed her to create a pioneering EV Network Technician Training Curriculum.

Subsequently, Terry and Ellis were selected for inclusion in Elemental Excelerator’s startup incubator program. They have since secured contracts with prominent EV charging network providers, including EV Connect and SparkCharge.

A Workforce Development Model

The company employs a workforce-development strategy in its hiring practices, exclusively recruiting in groups. Employees receive comprehensive training, attain two safety certifications, are guaranteed an hourly wage of $30, and are granted equity in the company, as stated by Terry.
