Character AI Launches Interactive Stories for Kids

Character.AI Introduces "Stories" Format
Character.AI revealed on Tuesday the launch of “Stories,” a novel format enabling users to develop interactive fictional narratives featuring beloved characters. This new functionality serves as an alternative to the company’s traditional chatbots.
Access to these chatbots has recently been restricted for individuals under the age of 18, a change implemented this week.
Concerns Regarding AI Chatbot Safety
This adjustment arises from escalating anxieties surrounding the potential mental health risks associated with AI chatbots. These chatbots are continuously available and capable of initiating dialogues with users.
Multiple legal actions have been initiated against organizations such as OpenAI and Character.AI, alleging their involvement in user suicides.
Over the preceding month, Character.AI has gradually reduced access for younger users, culminating in a complete ban on chatbot interaction for those under 18 as of Tuesday.
"Stories" as a Safer Alternative
“Stories provide a structured method for both creating and experiencing fiction, as opposed to unrestricted chat,” the company explained in a blog announcement.
This feature will be integrated alongside other multimodal capabilities, allowing teenagers to continue engaging with their preferred Characters within a more secure environment.
The Rise of Interactive Fiction
The popularity of interactive fiction has experienced significant growth in recent years, making Character.AI’s strategic shift logical.
However, it may not fully satisfy users who have developed a strong reliance on the chatbots, reinforcing the necessity of Character.AI’s decision to limit access.
User Reactions to the Change
Responses on the Character.AI subreddit are varied.
Some teenagers have expressed disappointment but acknowledge the decision as ultimately beneficial, according to their posted comments.
“I’m frustrated by the ban, but also relieved because it might help me overcome my addiction,” one teenage user shared.
Another user stated, “As someone under 18, this is disheartening, but understandable given the addictive nature of this platform.”
Psychological Differences Between "Stories" and Chatbots
The effectiveness of the Stories feature among teenagers remains to be seen, but the format presents fewer psychological concerns than chatbot roleplaying.
Unlike Stories, chatbots engage in direct, open-ended conversations with users and can even send unsolicited messages while the app isn’t actively in use.
Regulatory Landscape and Industry Standards
Character.AI’s decision to implement age restrictions on chatbot access coincides with California’s recent enactment of the first state-level regulations concerning AI companions.
Furthermore, Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) have proposed a federal bill that would entirely prohibit AI companions for minors.
“I sincerely hope that our actions establish an industry standard where open-ended chats are not offered to individuals under 18,” stated Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand in a recent interview with TechCrunch.
