carbon health raises $100 million with plans to expand pop-up clinics ahead of covid-19 vaccination programs

Carbon Health has secured $100 million in Series C funding, with Dragoneer Investment Group taking the lead and existing investors Brookfield Technology Partners, DCVC, and Builders VC also contributing. The company intends to utilize these funds to further its growth across the country, specifically through the launch of 100 temporary clinics in 20 different U.S. markets.

Over the last year, Carbon Health has significantly increased its presence, growing from an initial seven clinics to a total of 27 locations spanning six states. The healthcare company, specializing in primary care, has also broadened its services to include virtual care options. It prioritizes what it refers to as “omnichannel” care – delivering services through the most suitable, efficient, and convenient method for each patient. While a combined approach to care has always been central to its strategy, the company is now highlighting the adaptability of its system in light of COVID-19, and has notably expedited the development of its pop-up clinic initiative.

These clinics are established in underused areas where increased healthcare access is needed, such as parking areas and garages. Carbon Health collaborated with Reef Technology early on to establish these sites, utilizing mobile trailers resembling shipping containers to deliver on-site medical services. Eren Bali, Carbon Health’s founder and CEO, shared that while telehealth can be highly beneficial, certain situations necessitate support from nurse practitioners alongside virtual physician guidance to ensure comprehensive patient care.

The organization also plans to enhance testing capabilities through this model and, looking to the future, establish a framework to facilitate widespread distribution of a COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available. Recent scientific findings, including positive results from Pfizer’s Phase 3 clinical trial, are encouraging; however, a nationwide vaccination program will ultimately depend on collaboration between numerous parties, including primary care providers.
