Canva's New AI Features: Image Generation, Coding & Spreadsheets

The Integration of AI in Creative Software
Despite considerable resistance from artists concerning the increasing availability of AI-driven design tools and the data utilized for training generative models, companies specializing in creative software are actively incorporating AI into their offerings.
This demonstrates the rapid ascent of AI's significance within the industry. Software developers appear to believe that integrating AI is essential for their survival, irrespective of customer feedback.
Canva's New AI Features
Canva has recently reinforced this trend by announcing a comprehensive set of new AI features for its platform.
These additions include an AI assistant designed to aid users, functionality for developing applications through prompt engineering, expanded support for spreadsheets, and editing capabilities enhanced by AI.
The company unveiled these updates on Thursday, signaling a strong commitment to leveraging AI technology.
Specifically, the new features aim to streamline workflows and empower users with more intuitive creative processes.
- AI Assistant: Provides guidance and support during the design process.
- App Creation via Prompts: Enables users to build applications using simple text instructions.
- Spreadsheet Support: Expands Canva’s capabilities beyond visual design.
- AI-Powered Editing Tools: Offers intelligent enhancements to existing editing features.
The move by Canva underscores a broader industry shift towards embracing AI as a core component of creative software.
The Integration of Artificial Intelligence within Canva
Canva’s newly introduced AI assistant, referred to as Canva AI, offers a diverse range of capabilities. These include generating images based on user-defined prompts, and formulating design concepts for various applications like social media content or print materials. Furthermore, it is capable of composing written content and producing documents.
Expanding its functionality, a new tool called Canva Code allows users to instruct the assistant to develop small applications. Examples include interactive maps and customized calculators, which can then be seamlessly incorporated into designs. According to Cameron Adams, co-founder and chief product officer of the Australian design firm, this feature is a result of a partnership with Anthropic, as reported by TechCrunch.
Adams explained that the company has long promoted the creation of interactive prototypes. He noted that static mock-ups often fail to accurately represent the user experience Canva aims to deliver. Internal teams within Canva were already utilizing AI for prototyping, leading to the decision to externalize this capability and empower all users to easily create interactive experiences.
It’s important to acknowledge that Canva is not pioneering this approach. Several companies, including Cursor, Bolt.new, Lovable, and Replit, have gained significant traction by enabling users to generate applications through prompting. However, integrating such a feature directly into its platform aligns with Canva’s core value proposition – a service for designing a wide spectrum of materials, from marketing assets to complete websites.
New AI enhancements are also being added to Canva’s photo editing suite. One tool enables precise modification of elements within photos through simple point-and-click actions. Another is a background generator that intelligently considers lighting and composition. These additions position Canva to compete more effectively with established tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, and Pixelmator, which was acquired by Apple last year.
- Canva AI: An assistant for image creation, design ideas, copywriting, and document generation.
- Canva Code: A tool for building interactive mini-apps within Canva designs.
- AI Photo Editing Tools: Features for artifact modification and intelligent background generation.
The development of these features demonstrates Canva’s commitment to incorporating artificial intelligence to enhance its design capabilities and broaden its appeal to a wider range of users.
Canva Expands into Enterprise Solutions
In the past year, Canva introduced a product specifically designed for enterprise-level users. This offering aimed to provide enhanced functionality for larger organizations, including features such as single sign-on capabilities and comprehensive access control mechanisms.
Now, Canva is further extending its capabilities with the addition of Canva Sheets, a spreadsheet application.
Beyond standard spreadsheet functionalities, Canva Sheets incorporates a feature known as Magic Insights. This tool automatically analyzes data within the spreadsheet and presents key findings to the user.Furthermore, the Magic Charts feature automatically transforms numerical data into visually appealing charts.
These charts can be customized with branding elements, including specific graphics and logos.
Data Integration Capabilities
The company has confirmed that Canva Sheets offers integrations with several popular platforms.
- HubSpot
- Statista
- Google Analytics
- and others
These integrations facilitate the seamless import of data from various sources, streamlining workflows for users.
This allows users to easily bring in data for analysis and visualization.
The Debate Surrounding Artists and Artificial Intelligence
Several companies, including Adobe, Canva, and Pixlr, are exploring ways to enhance their services. However, the integration of AI into design software is generating considerable debate. Concerns are rising among artists regarding the unauthorized utilization of their work for AI model training.
Furthermore, a genuine risk to employment opportunities within the creative design sector is being recognized.
Despite these anxieties, Adams views this period not as a conflict between AI and human creativity, but as a catalyst for evolution and expansion within the industry.
“It is anticipated that all professional roles will undergo transformation as AI becomes more prevalent and diverse tools are incorporated across various disciplines,” he stated. “This includes areas such as design, product management, engineering, marketing, and sales.”
Adams continued, “Each position will evolve and adapt to leverage the assistance provided by AI-powered tools, presenting a substantial opportunity for advancement.”
These shifts are projected to occur more rapidly than many anticipate. Earlier this month, the company underwent staff reductions within its technical writing department.
This occurred approximately nine months after the co-founders encouraged employees to integrate AI applications into their workflows wherever feasible. Adams clarified that these layoffs were not a direct consequence of the AI tools being developed.
Instead, he attributed the restructuring as the primary driver behind the workforce adjustments.
The Impact on Creative Roles
The introduction of AI tools is prompting a re-evaluation of skill sets required for creative professions. Adaptability and a willingness to embrace new technologies will be crucial for professionals in this field.
AI is not necessarily intended to replace human designers, but rather to augment their capabilities and streamline certain processes.
- Enhanced Efficiency: AI can automate repetitive tasks, freeing up designers to focus on more complex and strategic aspects of their work.
- New Creative Avenues: AI tools can generate novel ideas and explore design possibilities that might not have been considered otherwise.
- Increased Productivity: By assisting with various stages of the design process, AI can contribute to faster project completion times.
However, it is essential to address the ethical considerations surrounding AI training data and ensure fair compensation for artists whose work is used in this process.
