Executive assistants excel at multitasking, and startup Cabinet is responding to this need by consolidating numerous applications into a single software platform. This is specifically designed to serve the market of 10 million administrative professionals.

Company Origins and Development

Founded in 2018 by Julia Leibowitz, CEO, and Evan Kesten, CTO, Cabinet maintains operational bases in Denver and New York. The company is focused on developing software to enhance daily productivity.

This includes a scheduling tool that integrates with established calendars such as Outlook and GCal, alongside a dedicated peer-to-peer community for EAs to facilitate knowledge sharing.

The Founder's Insight

Leibowitz’s own career began as an executive assistant, an experience she describes as “an incredible place to start.” This role provided her with valuable insight into organizational function, particularly at the leadership level.

As her responsibilities expanded, she realized the role encompassed far more than simply managing calendars and arranging executive travel – tasks commonly associated with EAs.

Expanding Responsibilities of Executive Assistants

The role also includes event coordination, office catering, human resources support, and even marketing initiatives. Capable EAs frequently handle a diverse range of tasks.

Leibowitz observed a gap in the market while in graduate school. Numerous tools were created to boost productivity for departments like engineering, sales, and HR, but executive assistants were often overlooked.

The Genesis of Cabinet

She connected with Kesten at Cornell Tech in 2018, where he was studying engineering while she pursued her MBA. Bringing him to an administrative professional conference revealed a striking absence of software vendors, and a significant gender imbalance – Kesten was one of only two men present.

This observation served as the initial impetus for the creation of Cabinet.

Software Capabilities and Features

Cabinet’s software offers a comprehensive suite of capabilities designed to streamline workflow, rather than focusing on a single feature. Some EAs manage schedules for multiple executives, potentially handling over 50 scheduling requests daily.

Unlike scheduling software geared towards individual executives, Cabinet offers the flexibility to either share a booking link or select from automatically aggregated available times based on the executive’s calendar.

The system can even generate a plain text email listing available time slots.

Beyond Scheduling: Comprehensive Efficiency

The software extends beyond scheduling to improve efficiencies in areas such as travel management, office administration, and inbox organization.

Cabinet operates on a subscription basis, priced at $29 per month with annual billing, or $36 per month for month-to-month access.

Empowering Executive Assistants

Leibowitz notes that this price point allows EAs to easily make purchases using their company credit cards. This highlights the purchasing power of EAs, who routinely manage expenses on behalf of their teams.

Funding and Investment

To expand its reach, Cabinet secured $2.6 million in funding, led by Harlem Capital, with participation from Good Friends Capital and Parade Ventures. This investment builds upon a pre-seed round from July 2020.

Investor Perspective

Henri Pierre-Jacques, managing partner of Harlem Capital, shared that the firm initially encountered Cabinet at a Techstars demo day in late 2020. He praised Leibowitz’s dedication and the product’s growth, particularly given the team’s size and her recent motherhood.

Growth and Community

Over the past six months, Cabinet has experienced 30% month-over-month growth. The company has also cultivated a community of over 4,000 administrative professionals who exchange valuable insights on topics like reliable conferencing software.

Future Development and Expansion

The new funding will be allocated to technology development, with a focus on rapidly iterating based on customer feedback. Cabinet prioritizes close collaboration with its users to drive efficiency in new feature releases.

The company is also actively recruiting for marketing and engineering positions in its Denver and New York offices, aiming to expand its team from three to eight employees within the next six months.
