Whitney Wolfe Herd Returning as Bumble CEO - March 2024

Whitney Wolfe Herd Returns as Bumble CEO
Bumble has announced that its founder, Whitney Wolfe Herd, is reassuming the role of Chief Executive Officer. This follows her departure from the position in 2023.
Wolfe Herd will be taking over from Lidiane Jones, the current CEO. Jones is leaving the company due to personal circumstances, as stated by Bumble. She will remain in her role until the leadership transition is completed around mid-March.
Founder Returns: A Common Trend
The return of a founder to the CEO position isn't unusual in the corporate world. Similar instances include Jack Dorsey’s reinstatement at Twitter and Steve Jobs’ comeback to Apple.
Founders often represent a logical choice for leadership, as they typically maintain a strong connection to the core values and objectives of the organization.
Bumble's Current Financial Situation
Wolfe Herd’s return occurs during a period of slower expansion for Bumble. Recent financial reports for the third quarter of 2024 indicated a decrease in overall revenue.
Total revenue reached $274 million, despite an increase in the number of paying users, which rose to 4.3 million. However, the average revenue generated per paying user (ARPPU) experienced a decline, falling from $23.42 to $21.17.
This leadership change may be intended to bolster investor confidence.
Looking Ahead to Q4 Results
As Bumble prepares to release its fourth-quarter financial results next month, the company has signaled positive expectations. They anticipate app revenue will exceed the midpoint of their previously communicated forecast.
Adjusted EBITDA is also projected to fall within the previously disclosed range.
Previous Financial Projections
In November, Bumble forecasted fourth-quarter revenue to be between $256 million and $262 million. Adjusted EBITDA was expected to be between $70 million and $73 million.
These projections provide a benchmark for evaluating the company’s performance in the upcoming earnings report.
