Buildots Secures $30 Million in Series B Funding

Following a $16 million raise last year, Buildots, a company specializing in construction technology, has successfully obtained $30 million in Series B funding.

Lightspeed Venture Partners spearheaded this funding round, with contributions from existing investors including TLV Partners, Future Energy Ventures, Tidhar Construction Group, and Maor Investments. This brings the total funding secured by the company to $46 million, as confirmed by Roy Danon, co-founder and CEO of Buildots, in a statement to TechCrunch.

Addressing Inefficiencies in the Construction Industry

Established three years ago, Buildots maintains its headquarters in both Tel Aviv and London. The company utilizes artificial intelligence and computer vision technologies to tackle inefficiencies prevalent within the construction sector.

Despite construction contributing 13% to global GDP and employing a vast workforce, productivity growth in the industry has remained stagnant, increasing by only 1% over the last two decades, Danon noted.

Danon’s research, involving six months spent directly on construction sites, revealed that a lack of effective control was a significant contributor to these inefficiencies. He observed that, unlike manufacturing, adherence to design specifications in construction is often compromised due to complex workflows and the involvement of multiple parties.

How Buildots’ Technology Works

Buildots’ solution bridges this gap by employing AI algorithms to automatically analyze images captured by 360-degree cameras worn by construction personnel. This process immediately identifies discrepancies between the original designs, project schedules, and the actual progress on site.

This allows project managers to make informed decisions and accelerate construction timelines. The technology also streamlines payment processes and ensures transparency in information.

“Buildots fosters a collaborative environment and builds trust by providing a single, reliable source of information for all stakeholders,” Danon explained. “This eliminates blame and corner-cutting, ultimately contributing to a safer and more ethical construction industry.”

Expansion and Future Plans

The decision to seek additional funding came after Buildots demonstrated strong product-market fit and began expanding its operations internationally.

The platform is currently deployed on significant building projects across the U.S., U.K., Germany, Switzerland, Scandinavia, and China. The new funding will be allocated to further international expansion, doubling the size of the global team – with a focus on sales, marketing, and research & development – and bolstering business development efforts.

Danon’s vision is “to establish Buildots as the industry standard for construction site management.” The company is also exploring potential applications of its technology in sectors beyond construction.

Lightspeed Venture Partners’ Perspective

Tal Morgenstern, a partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners, actively seeks out entrepreneurs who are veterans of the Israel Defense Forces – a background shared by the three founders of Buildots.

However, Morgenstern initially passed on investing in both the seed and Series A rounds. He later acknowledged this as a misjudgment, initially believing the technology to be too ambitious and the construction industry too resistant to change.

By the time of the Series B round, Morgenstern stated that Buildots had overcome these challenges, demonstrating both the viability of its technology and its ability to gain customer adoption with minimal sales and marketing effort.

“Buildots’ seamless image capture and the depth of insights it provides justify its premium pricing and are yielding impressive commercial results,” Morgenstern commented.

Growth and Data-Driven Innovation

Danon highlighted that increasing technology adoption on construction sites is enabling Buildots to rapidly develop industry-specific processes.

Over the past year, the company has experienced over 50% quarter-over-quarter growth in three key markets. Currently, Buildots collaborates with four of the top ten construction companies globally.

“While remote sales have been successful, establishing local offices is now a priority,” Danon added. “Furthermore, we are accumulating substantial data from construction sites, which we intend to leverage to identify and address challenges with measurable financial impact. This represents a logical next step in the company’s evolution.”
