Boom Supersonic to Build Factory in North Carolina

Boom Supersonic Advances with New Manufacturing Facility
The ambition to revive supersonic commercial air travel is gaining momentum as transportation innovator Boom moves closer to realization. The company revealed its intentions on Wednesday to establish a manufacturing plant at Piedmont Triad International Airport, situated in North Carolina.
Upon completion, “The Overture Superfactory” is projected to provide around 1,750 jobs by the year 2030. It will be dedicated to the production of Boom’s forthcoming Overture supersonic jet.
Overture Jet Production Timeline
Boom anticipates the Overture will begin transporting passengers in 2029. Construction of the facility is slated to commence later this year, with full production operations expected to follow in 2024.
The initial jet is scheduled to be completed in 2025, followed by test flights in 2026.
Airline Partnerships and Orders
The expansive 400,000 square foot facility will ultimately manufacture aircraft for a number of carriers, including both Japan Airlines and United Airlines.
United Airlines announced in 2021 its intention to procure 15 Overture jets, contingent upon the aircraft meeting stringent safety and performance criteria.
Furthermore, the agreement incorporates an option for United to potentially acquire an additional 35 aircraft, bringing the total possible order to 50 jets.
Revolutionizing Air Travel
Boom asserts that the Overture will fundamentally reshape the landscape of commercial aviation.
The company envisions the Mach 1.7 jet reducing travel time between San Francisco and Tokyo to approximately six hours.
Currently, a comparable flight on conventional aircraft typically requires around 11 hours.
Moreover, Boom claims the Overture will operate as a “net-zero carbon” aircraft, leveraging its compatibility with 100 percent sustainable aviation fuels.
North Carolina Benefits from Investment
This development represents a significant economic boost for the state of North Carolina.
Just recently, in late December, Toyota announced plans to construct a $1.29 billion battery manufacturing plant on the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite, located in Randolph County.
Expected to be operational by 2025, the facility will house four production lines capable of producing batteries for approximately 200,000 vehicles annually.
