Boeing Emissions: Charm Industrial's Carbon Capture Solution

Boeing and Charm Industrial Partner for Carbon Removal
Boeing has formalized an agreement with the emerging company, Charm Industrial, to facilitate the removal of 100,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere.
Charm Industrial’s Carbon Capture Process
Charm Industrial employs a unique method of carbon capture. They gather agricultural and forestry byproducts and subject them to intense heat.
This process transforms the waste into a complex mixture known as “bio-oil,” comprised of various hydrocarbons. The bio-oil is then injected deep underground, often utilizing repurposed oil wells, for long-term storage.
Upon successful sequestration, Charm Industrial is able to generate and sell carbon removal credits to businesses seeking to offset their emissions.
The Aviation Industry’s Carbon Challenge
The aviation sector has encountered significant difficulties in reducing its carbon footprint. Consequently, companies within the industry are actively exploring alternative solutions.
Carbon removal technologies have gained prominence as a potential solution, particularly due to their projected lower cost compared to a complete transition to sustainable aviation fuels.
Projected Costs for Net-Zero Aviation
Research indicates that the aviation industry may require substantial investment in carbon offsets to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Estimates suggest a minimum expenditure of $60 billion will be necessary for these offsets.
Beyond Carbon Removal: Biochar Production
In addition to bio-oil, Charm Industrial is capable of producing biochar.
Biochar, when incorporated into agricultural lands, has the potential to enhance soil fertility and productivity, although these applications are currently in the early stages of development, as reported by the carbon removal registry Isometric.
Deal Details and Previous Transactions
The specific financial details of the agreement between Boeing and Charm Industrial have not been publicly released.
Previously, in 2022, Charm Industrial sold 112,000 carbon removal credits to Frontier for $53 million, equating to approximately $470 per metric ton.
Charm Industrial has publicly stated its objective to reduce the cost of carbon removal to around $50 per metric ton.
