Bluesky Enhances User Experience with New Notification Updates

Bluesky unveiled three significant updates to its notification system on Monday. These enhancements are designed to provide users with greater control over their alerts, leading to a more personalized and less cluttered experience.

The updates introduce the capability to receive activity notifications for specific accounts. Users now have refined options to tailor their notification preferences, determining precisely which alerts they receive.

Customizing Notification Preferences

Bluesky users can access these new settings by navigating to Settings and then selecting Notifications. Here, they can customize alerts for a range of interactions, including new followers, likes, replies, mentions, quotes, and reposts.

An “Everything Else” option is also available, encompassing broader notifications like Starter Pack sign-ups and verification alerts.

Each notification type can be configured to apply either to accounts the user follows or to all accounts. Complete disabling of individual notification types is also possible.

Enhanced Engagement Through Repost Notifications

Users can now be notified when someone likes their reposts or reposts content they have shared. This is particularly beneficial for users who primarily engage by resharing posts, fostering a greater sense of connection.

The previous “priority notifications” feature has been superseded by these new controls. To replicate the functionality of filtering notifications to followed accounts only, users must adjust their reply, mention, and quote notification settings to “people you follow only.”

Activity Notifications: A Familiar Feature

The newly implemented activity notification feature mirrors those found on platforms such as X and Threads. It allows users to opt-in to receive notifications whenever a chosen account publishes new content or responds to a post.

To activate this feature, users can visit a profile and tap the bell icon located next to the Follow button. This will ensure they receive notifications for every new post from that account. A separate option controls reply notifications.

Management of activity notifications is also available within the settings menu, allowing users to remove accounts from their list if they no longer desire updates.

Limitations and Account Control

It’s important to note that account owners have the ability to disable activity notifications entirely. Consequently, users may not be able to enable notifications for every account they follow.

Account owners also retain the option to enable activity notifications only for the accounts they themselves follow, providing an additional layer of control.
