Bluesky Now Supports Video Uploads - Up to 3 Minutes

Bluesky Increases Video Length and Introduces New Features
Bluesky, the decentralized social network, has announced an increase in the maximum video length permitted on its platform. As of Monday, users can now upload videos lasting up to three minutes.
Expanded Video Capabilities
Initially, when video support was introduced in September, uploads were restricted to a 60-second duration. This update positions Bluesky’s user experience more competitively alongside platforms like X (previously Twitter) and Meta’s Threads.
Currently, X permits non-subscribers to upload videos with a maximum length of two minutes and 20 seconds. Threads, conversely, allows for videos up to five minutes in length.
Implications for Third-Party Apps
The extended video limit is particularly beneficial for developers creating applications designed to replicate the TikTok experience within the Bluesky ecosystem. Apps like Bluescreen and Skylight are actively working to deliver enhanced video functionality.
These developers are pursuing strategies ranging from video-centric Bluesky clients to entirely new applications built upon the AT Protocol, the foundation of Bluesky. The longer time limit enables them to provide a more comparable alternative to TikTok, where videos can be up to 10 minutes long.
New Features for User Interaction
Alongside the video update, Bluesky has implemented a new “Chat requests” screen. This feature allows users to manage incoming messages from individuals they do not currently follow.
Users can now easily accept or decline direct message requests through this dedicated screen, enhancing control over their interactions.
Improved Usability and Moderation
Bluesky has also streamlined the account muting process. Users can now mute accounts directly from the three-dot menu on any post.
Further improvements include optimized layouts for tablet devices on the web platform and a refined moderation reporting system. These updates aim to improve the overall user experience and platform safety.
These changes demonstrate Bluesky’s commitment to evolving its platform and addressing user feedback.
