Bluesky Launches Blue Check Verification | New Social Media Feature

Bluesky Introduces Blue Check Verification

Bluesky officially began the rollout of blue check verification on Monday, a development previously indicated by circulating reports.

Similar to the initial function of Twitter’s blue checkmark (now discontinued), Bluesky’s verification system aims to authenticate prominent accounts.

This authentication process will enable users to readily identify genuine accounts and confirm the authenticity of their published content.

Initial Verification Phase

Initially, Bluesky will collaborate with a limited number of designated “Trusted Verifiers.”

These are independent entities authorized to verify accounts belonging to their personnel.

For instance, a corporation might utilize this system to verify its public relations staff, thereby assuring users of a reliable source for company-related information.

Bluesky’s moderation team will review each new verification request to ensure its validity.

Existing Verification Methods

Bluesky previously offered a verification method allowing users to associate their accounts with a domain they control.

This allowed users to confirm the authenticity of accounts like TechCrunch’s, as only the legitimate domain owner could access this feature.

Combating Disinformation

For public figures – including celebrities, journalists, and politicians – this enhanced verification layer will assist in reducing the spread of misinformation from impersonation attempts.

Currently, 270,000 accounts on Bluesky have linked their usernames to a website, according to the platform.

“Domain handles will remain a crucial component of verification on Bluesky,” stated the Bluesky team in a blog post.

“However, we’ve also received feedback indicating that a more prominent visual indicator would be beneficial in identifying authentic accounts.”

Future Verification Access

At present, Bluesky is not accepting direct applications for verification.

However, the platform intends to introduce a request form in the near future to facilitate broader access to the verification process.
