Bluesky Now Supports Video Profiles - Social Media Update

Bluesky Intensifies Focus on Video Content

The social networking platform, Bluesky, is significantly expanding its video capabilities. Following the introduction of a personalized video feed reminiscent of TikTok last week – a move occurring amidst the temporary suspension of the U.S. ban on the widely-used video application – the company announced on Monday the implementation of a dedicated video tab on Bluesky user profiles.

Showcasing Video Content

This new tab will enable users to prominently display videos they have uploaded to Bluesky. Content can include original creations or videos sourced from other social media platforms, notably including TikTok.

Potential Revenue Opportunities

Beyond simply mirroring the popularity of video-centric social media, the increased emphasis on video presents Bluesky with potential avenues for monetization. Should video adoption grow, the company could introduce paid features, such as extended video length or enhanced video quality, as part of its forthcoming premium subscription service.

User Feedback and Concerns

However, the shift towards a more video-heavy platform isn't universally welcomed by Bluesky users. Some are inquiring about the possibility of disabling the video tab on their individual profiles.

Others are voicing a preference for the prioritization of features currently available on X, such as the implementation of an Edit button for posts.

Developer Activity and Interest

Despite these concerns, there is demonstrable demand and active developer engagement in creating video-focused Bluesky applications.

Currently, multiple developers are constructing applications modeled after TikTok for the Bluesky platform. Examples include Sebastian Vogelsang, a developer based in Berlin, creator of the Bluesky apps Skeets and Flashes (functioning as a Bluesky equivalent of Instagram), as well as the teams developing the upcoming apps Reelo and Skylight.

Investment Potential

Notably, prominent investor and entrepreneur Mark Cuban has expressed interest in financially supporting a video application built upon the AT Protocol, the underlying technology powering Bluesky.

Recent Updates

The new user profile video tab was integrated in the Bluesky 1.97 update. This update also includes a menu for blocking users and deleting conversations following a direct message (DM) report, alongside various translation enhancements.

The update aims to improve user control and platform functionality.
