Bibit Secures $65M in Latest Funding Round Led by Sequoia Capital India

Bibit Secures $65 Million in New Funding Led by Sequoia Capital India
Just four months after participating in a $30 million growth round, Sequoia Capital India has further invested in Bibit, the Indonesian robo-advisor application.
Investment Details and Total Funding
Bibit recently announced a new $65 million growth round, spearheaded by Sequoia Capital India. This funding round also saw contributions from Prosus Ventures, Tencent, Harvard Management Company, and existing investors AC Ventures and East Ventures.
With this latest investment, Bibit’s total funding now reaches $110 million. This includes a previously announced Series A round completed in May 2019.
Future Plans for the Funding
The newly acquired capital will be allocated to several key areas. These include the development and launch of innovative new products, expansion of the Bibit team through strategic hiring, and enhancement of the platform’s financial education resources.
Bibit and the Rise of Indonesian Investment Apps
Launched in 2019 by Stockbit, a stock investing platform and community, Bibit is part of a growing wave of Indonesian investment applications targeting new investors.
Other prominent players in this sector include Ajaib (backed by SoftBank Ventures), Bareksa, Pluang, and FUNDtastic.
Robo-Advisor Services and Target Demographic
Bibit provides robo-advisor services focused on mutual funds. The platform invests user funds based on individual risk assessments.
The company reports that a significant majority – 90% – of its user base consists of millennials and individuals making their first investments.
Growth in Indonesian Retail Investors
Data from Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan) indicates a substantial increase in retail investors. A 56% year-over-year growth was recorded in 2020.
Specifically, the number of investors in mutual funds grew by 78% year-over-year, reaching 3.2 million, according to data from the Indonesia Stock Exchange and Central Securities Custodian.
Impact of COVID-19 on Investment Trends
Despite the economic challenges presented by COVID-19, interest in stock investing actually increased. Investors capitalized on market downturns, such as the decline of the Jakarta Composite Index in the first quarter of 2020, which has since shown steady recovery.
Apps like Bibit and its competitors aim to democratize capital investing by offering lower fees and reduced minimum investment requirements compared to traditional brokerages like Mandiri Sekuritas.
Opportunities for Growth in the Indonesian Market
The proportion of retail investors in Indonesia remains relatively low when compared to more developed markets like Singapore or Malaysia. This presents significant opportunities for growth within the investment services sector.
Focus on Financial Education
Platforms such as Bibit prioritize content designed to make capital investing less daunting for novice investors. Ajaib similarly emphasizes its financial education features as a key differentiator.
Sequoia Capital India’s Perspective
Rohit Agarwal, vice president at Sequoia Capital India, stated in a press release, “Indonesian mutual fund customers have grown almost tenfold in the past five years.”
He continued, “Investing through mutual funds represents an initial step towards broader investment participation, and Bibit has successfully guided millions of consumers to begin their investment journey responsibly. Sequoia Capital India is pleased to strengthen its partnership as the company extends its customer-centric approach to stock investing via Stockbit.”
