Beyond Meat China: First Production Plant Opens

Beyond Meat Expands Production to China

Approximately one year following its initial introduction in China through Starbucks’s menu, Beyond Meat, the California-based plant-based protein innovator, has inaugurated a production facility located near Shanghai.

This strategic move aims to leverage China’s robust supply chain capabilities and potentially diminish the carbon footprint associated with its product distribution.

New Facility Details

The plant, situated in Jiaxing – a city 85 kilometers from Shanghai – represents Beyond Meat’s first fully integrated manufacturing operation outside of the United States.

The Nasdaq-listed company formally announced the opening on Wednesday, signaling a significant step in its international expansion.

Increased Competition in the Chinese Market

The past year has witnessed a surge in competition within China’s alternative protein sector.

This intensification is driven by the entry of international companies such as Beyond Meat and Eat Just, alongside substantial investment in domestic startups like Hey Maet and Starfield.

Beyond Meat’s Competitive Stance

Despite the growing rivalry, Beyond Meat remains confident in its position.

When questioned by TechCrunch regarding the evolving Chinese alternative protein landscape, a company representative asserted that no current entities are considered direct competitors.

China’s Unique Market Advantages

China presents a uniquely advantageous market for meat alternatives, boasting both a vast and largely untapped consumer base.

Furthermore, the nation serves as a key supplier of plant-based protein sources.

Domestic Chinese startups benefit from inherent cost efficiencies and attract considerable investor interest, particularly for consumer products aligned with the preferences of the expanding middle class.

The Importance of Localized Production

Establishing manufacturing capabilities within China is becoming increasingly essential for any serious international competitor.

Tesla previously adopted this strategy by constructing a Gigafactory in Shanghai to offer more affordable electric vehicles.

Localized production also contributes to enhanced sustainability by streamlining the supply chain.

Benefits of the Jiaxing Facility

According to Beyond Meat, the Jiaxing facility is “anticipated to substantially accelerate the company’s production and distribution speed within the region.”

It is also expected to improve the company’s cost structure and enhance the sustainability of its operations.

Localization Efforts and Product Development

Beyond Meat is actively pursuing localization, offering both its signature burger patties and an imitation minced pork product tailored specifically for the world’s largest pork consumer.

This soy- and rice-based minced pork is designed for versatility in a wide array of Chinese dishes and was developed collaboratively by the company’s teams in Shanghai and Los Angeles.

The Jiaxing plant will also house research and development functions, focused on creating new products tailored to the regional market.

Beyond Meat also plans to launch its first company-owned manufacturing facility in Europe later this year.

CEO Statement

“We are dedicated to investing in China for sustained, long-term growth,” stated Ethan Brown, CEO and founder of Beyond Meat.

“We are confident that this new manufacturing facility will be crucial in improving our pricing and sustainability performance as we strive to provide Chinese consumers with delicious plant-based proteins that are beneficial for both people and the planet.”

Product Availability

Currently, Beyond Meat products are available at Starbucks, KFC, Alibaba’s Hema supermarket, and other retail locations across major Chinese cities.
