Bernie Sanders Proposes 4-Day Workweek Due to AI Productivity

Sanders Proposes Reduced Workweek Due to AI Productivity Gains
Amidst widespread claims from artificial intelligence firms regarding the transformative impact of their products on productivity, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is advocating for the technology sector to translate these gains into tangible benefits for workers.
During a recent conversation with podcast host Joe Rogan, Sanders posited that the time efficiencies realized through AI tools should be channeled back to employees, allowing them increased time with their families.
A Shift in Perspective on Technological Advancement
“Technology should serve to enhance our lives, not solely enrich the owners of technology and the chief executives of major corporations,” Sanders stated. “If your productivity is enhanced through the implementation of AI, rather than resorting to layoffs, a reduction in the workweek to 32 hours is a logical step.”
This proposition would likely be welcomed by many, yet viewed with dismay by those accustomed to prioritizing shareholder value above all else.
Differing Visions for AI-Driven Efficiency
The tech industry often anticipates that AI-fueled productivity increases will enable companies to expand their output, either by assigning workers additional responsibilities or by reducing their workforce.
However, Sanders envisions a scenario where workers can accomplish their current tasks in fewer hours without a reduction in pay, potentially allowing them to attend personal events like their children’s sporting activities.
“This isn’t a particularly groundbreaking concept,” Sanders added. “Numerous companies globally are already experimenting with this model and achieving positive results.”
Successful Trials of Reduced Workweeks
In the United Kingdom, a pilot program involving 61 companies and approximately 2,900 employees tested a four-day workweek during the latter part of 2022.
Of the 23 companies that disclosed financial data, revenue remained largely consistent throughout the trial, experiencing an average increase of 1.4%.
Examples of Companies Embracing a Four-Day Workweek
- Kickstarter has been operating on a four-day workweek since 2021.
- Microsoft Japan conducted a four-day workweek pilot program in 2019, reporting a 40% surge in productivity.
Sanders' Call to Action
“Let us harness technology to improve the lives of workers,” Sanders concluded. “This means providing them with more time for family, friends, education, and pursuing their personal interests.”
