Bakar Labs: Berkeley's New Biotech Incubator

UC Berkeley Launches Bakar Labs: A New Incubator for Startups
The University of California has consistently supported the startup landscape within the state, demonstrated through its operation of various incubators and accelerators. Now, Berkeley is set to unveil a substantial new incubator, Bakar Labs, designed to accommodate up to 80 emerging companies annually. This facility will grant access to both university resources and valuable networking opportunities.
Location and Overview
Situated within the architecturally striking Woo Hon Fai Hall, previously the home of the Berkeley Art Museum, the incubator forms an integral part of the broader Bakar BioEnginuity Hub. This hub represents a continuing, interdisciplinary initiative at the university.
The operations will be overseen by QB3, a UC-wide organization dedicated to fostering entrepreneurial endeavors, effectively replacing a smaller, previously biotech-centric program at Berkeley.
A Unique Approach to Incubation
Unlike many accelerators that offer a structured curriculum focused on achieving product-market fit and team building, Bakar Labs will function as a supportive host, providing access to cutting-edge resources. Berkeley’s standing as a leading research institution, with its distinguished faculty and extensive facilities, will be a key benefit for those accepted into the program.
Startups are not required to have any prior affiliation with Berkeley; the hub aims to attract founders from diverse backgrounds with the appeal of affordable office and laboratory space, alongside access to the university’s comprehensive resources. The term “incubator” aptly describes the approach – providing a nurturing environment for growth.
Funding and Equity
The incubator’s hands-off philosophy extends to funding arrangements. Companies will cover the costs associated with their participation, but there is no obligation to relinquish equity or grant Berkeley preferential rights.
While investments may occur through an associated venture capital fund, this is not a mandatory component of the program, as explained by a QB3 representative.
Relationship with Skydeck
Bakar Labs operates independently of Berkeley’s Skydeck, another university entrepreneurship program that has successfully launched several high-value companies, including those in the biotechnology sector. The team responsible for selecting companies for Bakar Labs previously assisted Skydeck with its biotech applications, suggesting a collaborative, yet distinct, pathway for startups.
Selection Criteria
Companies will be evaluated based on their potential – encompassing both business viability and scientific merit. Gino Segre, managing director of Bakar Labs, indicated that the specific requirements and preferences will remain adaptable.
He emphasized a preference for ventures that prioritize both positive social impact and financial sustainability. “We encourage teams with a double bottom line to apply — they aim to better human health and are pursuing a profit-driven business model. Entrepreneurship for good,” he stated.
Ideal Startup Profile
The hub is particularly interested in teams ranging from two to fifteen individuals, possessing at least six months of operating capital, and utilizing innovative technologies that necessitate laboratory facilities for further development.
While there is no fixed time limit for residency, prolonged stays beyond a couple of years may indicate a lack of progress. The incubator serves as an ideal stepping stone, enabling startups to secure funding and establish their own independent office and laboratory spaces.
University Support
UC Chancellor Carol T. Christ highlighted the potential of the Bakar BioEnginuity Hub, stating, “The Bakar BioEnginuity Hub holds enormous promise as a space for mobilizing our vibrant changemaking students and faculty, our powerful research enterprise, and a community of innovators who will maximize societal benefit over profit.”
