Assessing Application Startup Performance with AppTimer

Numerous requests were received during the development of the Secure Computing series for a comparative analysis of various security utilities. Consequently, we will now examine a complimentary utility designed to measure the time an application requires to initialize.

AppTimer, developed by PassMark, is a portable application that doesn't necessitate installation and can be executed directly from a USB flash drive. While this represents only one aspect of a comprehensive software performance assessment, it proves to be a remarkably useful tool.

Utilizing AppTimer

Begin by downloading the application file and extracting its contents. Subsequently, launch the executable program.

AppTimer operates by repeatedly launching a chosen application to accurately determine the time it takes to reach a functional state. As a demonstration, we will analyze Microsoft Outlook 2007. The application selection process involves browsing to the software’s executable file – typically located at C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12 for Outlook.

AppTimer maintains logs of each test performed. Therefore, it is advisable to designate a specific directory for storing these log files.

To initiate the test, ensure the application being tested is completely closed, and then click the "Run App" button.

Upon activation, AppTimer will launch the selected application. Observe the status updates displayed in the Status field. Upon completion, a confirmation message will appear.

The recorded results, expressed in milliseconds, can then be accessed by opening the saved log file.

Returning to AppTimer’s interface, you can customize various test parameters. These include adjusting the number of test iterations, modifying the delay time, and altering the method by which the application window is closed.

A comprehensive help file details each configurable option, allowing for tailored tests under diverse conditions.

An intriguing application of AppTimer involves testing resource-intensive programs like Photoshop. Furthermore, varying system conditions can influence launch times.

For instance, comparing the startup time of Photoshop when launched with multiple applications already running versus when launched on a clean system can yield valuable insights. A wide range of tests can be conducted and compared across different system configurations.

This utility offers a compelling and enjoyable experience for those deeply interested in performance analysis.
