Smart Home Device Support Sunset: Belkin Discontinues Wemo Products

Yet another instance of a smart device ecosystem facing obsolescence has emerged. Belkin has announced the cessation of technical support for its older Wemo products, effective January 31, 2026.

Impact on Wemo Device Users

This decision will render the associated app unusable, impacting a broad spectrum of devices. These include smart plugs, light switches, smart bulbs, baby monitors, and appliances for the kitchen, heating, and air purification.

Belkin communicated this change to its customer base, citing a need to reallocate resources within the company.

Company Rationale for Discontinuation

“This was a difficult decision,” the company stated in an email. “Since the initial launch of Wemo in 2011, we have been dedicated to delivering innovative and user-friendly smart home accessories. However, as technology progresses, we must concentrate our efforts on different areas of the Belkin business.”

The company expressed regret for any disruption this may cause to user routines.

Continued Functionality and Refunds

Products still covered by warranty as of the end-of-life date may qualify for a partial refund. Furthermore, devices configured for use with Apple’s HomeKit will retain functionality even without Wemo’s cloud services or the Wemo app.

However, the app itself will cease to be supported after January 31, 2026, and features reliant on cloud connectivity, such as remote access and voice control, will be lost.

End of Technical Assistance

Belkin will no longer provide technical support, firmware updates, software updates, or troubleshooting assistance following the specified date.

A Growing Trend in the Smart Home Industry

The termination of support for a line of smart home products leaves consumers without access to technology integrated into their daily lives. This extends beyond simple gadgets; it affects essential home systems.

It is becoming increasingly prevalent for companies to discontinue support for older smart home products, often without a specific technical justification. This allows them to refocus on more lucrative business segments.

Google's Similar Actions with Nest Devices

Google recently announced a comparable move, choosing to discontinue support for older Nest devices.

The tech giant declared in April that it would no longer support its earliest Nest Learning Thermostats to enable “full investment” in its latest generation.

Nest Thermostat Discontinuation Details

As of October 25, 2025, first- and second-generation Nest models will lose connected features, cease receiving updates, and become incompatible with the Nest or Google Home app, effectively becoming standard, non-smart devices.

Incentivizing Upgrades

Rather than supporting its existing customer base, Google is offering upgrades to newer models, such as a $130 discount on the Nest 4th-gen thermostat, normally priced at $279.99. While potentially a good deal, forced upgrades due to obsolescence are unwelcome for customers whose devices still function adequately.

Mitigating Legal Risks

This strategy also serves to protect Google from potential class action lawsuits. By phasing out support and incentivizing upgrades, Google can argue that usage of older devices was minimal if legal action is pursued, potentially reducing fines or compensation.

Providing advance notice of these changes further minimizes the company’s legal exposure.

Impact on Wemo Customers

Customers heavily invested in the Wemo ecosystem may experience significant disruption and frustration, particularly if they are ineligible for a partial refund.

Affected Devices List

Belkin has published a comprehensive list of affected devices, encompassing a wide range of smart home products across various categories.
