Baidu Launches New ERNIE AI Model Versions

Baidu Unveils New AI Models: Ernie 4.5 and Ernie X1
Baidu, the leading Chinese search engine, has recently introduced two advanced AI models. These include Ernie 4.5, an updated iteration of its core foundational model initially launched two years prior, and Ernie X1, a newly developed reasoning model.
Ernie X1: Performance and Cost-Effectiveness
Reports from Reuters indicate that Baidu asserts Ernie X1 achieves performance levels comparable to DeepSeek R1. Notably, this is accomplished at approximately half the cost.
The company highlights Ernie 4.5’s enhanced ability to interpret nuanced communication. This includes understanding complex concepts like memes and satire, demonstrating a “high EQ” within the model.
Multimodal Capabilities of Both Models
Both Ernie 4.5 and Ernie X1 possess multimodal capabilities. This allows them to effectively process a diverse range of data types.
These data types include not only text but also video, images, and audio content.
Baidu's Position in the AI Landscape
Although Baidu was an early entrant in the Chinese AI market, competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, it has faced challenges in achieving broad user acceptance.
Conversely, DeepSeek has recently garnered attention by releasing high-performing models at significantly reduced costs, causing some disruption among American AI firms and investors.
Future Developments: Ernie 5
As previously reported by CNBC, Baidu is preparing to release Ernie 5, its next-generation model, later in the current year.
Further enhancements to its multimodal functionalities are anticipated with the launch of Ernie 5.
