AWS Nova AI Models & New Customer Control Service Launched

Amazon Web Services Expands AI Capabilities with Nova 2

Amazon Web Services is introducing a range of new, internally developed AI models and a dedicated service enabling enterprise clients to construct their own tailored versions.

The unveiling of Nova 2, comprising a suite of four new AI models, occurred during AWS CEO Matt Garman’s keynote address at AWS re:Invent on Tuesday, expanding upon the existing Nova model family.

Initial Nova Release and Subsequent Growth

The first iteration of AWS Nova was initially presented at the company’s annual technology conference last year.

At that time, four models focused on text generation and a single model for image creation were released.

This year, AWS is enhancing these models and simultaneously launching a complementary service.

“The reception has been exceptionally positive,” Garman stated during his Tuesday keynote. “Nova has rapidly gained traction, now serving tens of thousands of customers, including major marketing firms and technology leaders such as Infosys, Blue Origin, and Robinhood, as well as innovative startups like NinjaTech AI.”

Introducing the Nova 2 Model Suite

The new models encompass Nova 2 Lite, a cost-optimized reasoning model.

Reasoning AI models are designed to analyze information before responding, processing text, images, and videos to generate text suitable for everyday applications.

Nova 2 Pro functions as a reasoning agent capable of handling text, images, videos, and speech, specifically engineered for “highly complex tasks,” including coding.

Nova 2 Sonic is a novel speech-to-speech model intended for use in conversational AI systems.

Nova 2 Omni is a multimodal reasoning and generation model that can process diverse inputs – images, text, video, and speech – and produce both textual and visual outputs.

Nova Forge: Custom AI Model Creation

In addition to the model upgrades, AWS announced Nova Forge, a new service.

Nova Forge allows AWS cloud customers to build their own customized versions of AWS Nova models, termed Novellas, for an annual fee of $100,000, as reported by CNBC.

This service provides enterprises with access to models that are pre-trained, mid-trained, or post-trained, enabling them to further refine the models using their own proprietary data.

Garman explained that this service addresses challenges encountered when integrating custom data into pre-existing AI models.

Addressing Model Customization Challenges

“Extensive model customization, particularly adding data during post-training, can lead to a loss of the initial reasoning capabilities the model possessed,” Garman noted.

“This phenomenon mirrors the human experience of language acquisition; learning a new language is easier at a young age than later in life.”

“Similarly, model training exhibits this characteristic.”

Early Adopters of Nova Forge

Companies including Reddit, Sony, and Booking.com are among the first to utilize Nova Forge.
