Automatically Post Webcam Snapshots to Your Blog

Automating Blog Content with Webcam Snapshots
Maintaining a website or blog often presents the challenge of consistently generating fresh content. If you find yourself facing this issue, or simply seeking innovative approaches, automating some of your posting processes could be a beneficial solution.
The potential for autoblogging is substantial, particularly depending on the focus of your online platform. This isn't limited to simply aggregating external RSS feeds. More sophisticated methods exist.
Exploring Autoblogging Possibilities
Consider the possibilities: your mobile device could periodically update your blog with its GPS coordinates. Alternatively, your computer could automatically log its activity over a 24-hour period and publish it. A particularly engaging option involves automatically posting webcam snapshots to your blog when motion or changes are detected.
This article will focus on implementing the latter – automating the posting of webcam images. We will leverage two applications previously reviewed on MakeUseOf to achieve this.
Required Applications
The first application is Active Webcam, which was previously utilized in the creation of a home security system. The second is the Wordpress Postie plugin, enabling post submissions via email. Integrating these two tools will allow you to construct a fully automated webcam blogging system.
By combining the capabilities of Active Webcam and the Postie plugin, a dynamic and regularly updated blog feed can be established, requiring minimal manual intervention.
This system offers a unique way to engage your audience with real-time visual updates from your webcam.
Configuring Active Webcam for Automated Updates
Initiating automatic webcam snapshots for your blog begins with downloading and installing the Active Webcam software. This installation is necessary on each computer connected to the webcam, unless a network IP webcam is utilized, which allows sharing across the entire network. Upon launching Active Webcam, navigate to File -> New Camera to select the desired webcam type.

In this instance, a publicly accessible webcam streaming from an engineering institution in California is being employed. Integrating public webcams into your automated blog updates is a viable option – explore and utilize content from diverse sources, be it your own webcam or publicly available streams.

The active webcam is now visible. Multiple webcams can be added and assigned custom names for display within your blog posts. After adding the necessary webcams, proceed to configure the software to generate blog entries via email updates. This configuration is found within the Motion Detection settings, accessible through Settings -> Motion Detection.

While motion detection isn't directly utilized, the schedule will be configured to capture camera updates at predetermined intervals. Begin by clicking "Send Email" followed by the "Email Settings" button. This section allows for the creation of the post entry that will be transmitted to your blog.
Several key points require attention here. Record the email address designated as the "sender," as it will be needed later. The "Recipient" field should contain a unique email address dedicated solely to this purpose. If necessary, establish a new, complimentary email account. Ensure the SMTP server settings are accurately configured.
The entered "Subject" will become the title of your blog post, and the "Message" will constitute the body of the entry. Dynamic blog entries can be created by incorporating variables such as {Camera} for the camera number, or the current date and time. Crucially, ensure your blog entry is delimited by ":start" at the beginning and ":end" at the end, to guarantee correct posting by the Postie plugin.

Lastly, navigate to Tools -> Scheduler and activate the scheduler by clicking "Enable Scheduler." The software can then be set to periodically check the webcam, and upon detecting motion, will dispatch the configured email. Your automated webcam blogging system is now fully operational!
Configuring Postie for Webcam Blog Updates
The concluding phase involves setting up the Postie plugin to receive and publish entries from your webcam. Begin by downloading the Postie WordPress plugin and then adhere to the guidance provided in the Postie documentation for initial configuration.
The process is generally uncomplicated, but ensuring the "sender" email address defined within Active Webcam is authorized within your Postie settings is crucial. Furthermore, the recipient address should correspond to the Postie email address.

This illustration demonstrates the Postie plugin actively processing an incoming post originating from a webcam update.

Below is the appearance of the automated webcam blog update following its successful publication to the blog.

Experiment with the available variables to customize your posts. This method provides a remarkable opportunity to keep your audience informed with real-time data from any geographical location.
Consider showcasing intriguing places, well-known landmarks, or any publicly accessible webcam feed you find – or even one you establish yourself. You can leverage these feeds to deliver status updates with image captures directly to your blog, all without manual intervention.
What innovative applications can you envision for your own webcam-driven blog posts? Feel free to share your ideas in the comments section below.
