Autodesk Acquires Upchain to Enhance Product Lifecycle Management

Autodesk, a publicly held software corporation renowned for its computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D modeling applications, has announced the acquisition of Upchain. Upchain, headquartered in Toronto, is a startup specializing in a cloud-native product lifecycle management (PLM) platform.

Transaction Details

The financial terms of the acquisition were not revealed by either company. However, it is anticipated that the deal will be finalized before July 31, 2021.

Upchain's Funding and Focus

According to Crunchbase data, Upchain secured approximately $7.4 million in funding since its inception in 2015. The company was founded on the premise that conventional PLM systems often prove overly complex and are primarily designed for large, multinational organizations.

Upchain specifically targets small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), offering a more accessible and user-friendly alternative. Its clientele encompasses diverse sectors, including textiles, apparel, automotive, aerospace, industrial machinery, transportation, and entertainment.

John Laslavic, CEO and founder of Upchain, stated that the company’s core mission was to improve cloud-based collaboration throughout the entire product lifecycle. He emphasized the goal of providing all stakeholders with the necessary data, precisely when they require it.

Autodesk's Acquisition Strategy

This acquisition marks Autodesk’s fifteenth since 2017. Earlier in the year, the company completed its largest acquisition to date, purchasing Innovyze, a Portland, Oregon-based firm specializing in water management modeling and lifecycle solutions, for $1 billion.
